I have an invite I am working on to proote an event to celebrate 'a million reasons to smile' (nonprofit crap - some rich people gave $1 million to an area agency and are being recognized). Anyways I want to actually print 1 million things to show the vastness of this number. I was thinking very simply a 5x7 card that would open and have the who, when, where on one flap and roll-fold glued onto the other flap that when rolled out would actually have 1 million dots on it and some explanation of why.
Can anyone think of a better way to approch this? I do not know what a million dots looks like (probably a solid black, hahah). Any thhoughts?

well if you have 300 dpi you would need 3,333.33 inches of space to show 1,000,000 dots as a solid blob. i can't think of a way to do it right now but i don't think the million dots is a feasible idea.

figure out how many pages you want it over first then start doing some division. One 5x7 @ 300 dpi has 3,150,000 pixels so you'd have each dot (and the space around the dot) taking up roughly 3 pixels each (make a pattern fill out of a 3x3 image). I'd advise not filling all of the space with dots leave the last row or something conspicuously absent or half there, otherwise the viewer will just see it as a pattern and think nothing of it.

hummmm. Math, interesting way to go. I like the idea of doing a stiched booklet vs the roll fold. I have yet to see an invite that is designed like a booklet - this could be cool. thanks for the numbers.

I think you should start with some sketches :P

1,000,000 million dots in a square would be 1,000 dots high by 1,000 dots wide.
If each dot were 1/4 pt wide, with a 1/4 gap till the next dot (chequerbaord) the million dots would cover a space 500pts high by 500pts wide. In metric that is 176.389mm. Imperial is 6.944 inches.
If each dot were a 1/4 point wide and square you'd have a chequerboard.
If each dot were a 1/4 point wide and circular you'd have a tint of 35% ish.

I think he just wants 1 million dots and not 1,000,000 million. That would be HUGE!!! :P I kid I kid.

I have this worked out to 46,800 dots per page taking 23.3 pages or 10.6 sheets for a grand total of 1,000,000 dots - it's a freaky thing.
..Start with a sketch, why I outta! :-)

Idea... how about a drawing of a bucket... with dots being poured into it. Have the fill color of the bucket the same as the dots... and some copy to say they filled this bucket with 1 million donations.
how about a close up picture of a smile made up of 1 million different coloured dots?

Nice idea but it's a little more complicated - there are actually 3 different $million things going this night not all concerning money. I more or less want to show how big that number is. It gets tossed around a lot these days and people no longer impressed - when they see 1 MILLION dots...I will change their thinking and force them to realize how amazing that number is - Or I will waste a lot on invotes that will thrown away without anyone noticing? It's always a crap shoot.

^^^^^ to much. not enought time to make it happen. I am going to keep this solid black for both cost AND registration issues.

Maybe just do 1,000 dots, then in the explanation let the people know. Says something like:
Mr. and Mrs. Lorem Ipsum gave a million dollars to the Lorem Ipsum Foundation. To put this into perspective, each dot represents $1,000 and you are looking at a thousand dots.
or you could do 1 hundred larger dots (each on representing $10,000 [obviously]) and it would still be an impressive when rolled out.

(3/4 inch dots 5 wide 20 up on a 5 x 19 inch roll)
How about using some fun facts about a million. Like for instance if you had a million dollar bills and you counted them at the rate of 1 per second it would take you about 11 and a half days. Or if there was a book with a million pages it would be the height of a 27 story building. Just a thought :)

OK... on this train of thought, are we using 70lb text... what if the book was 16pt cover stock?? :p
Great ideas Kool!

if you had a million dollar bills lined up end to end, you could go 1/2465th of the way to the moon.

These seem to suggest that 1 million is not much at all.

I use use 1,000 or 10,000 dollar bills tiled up on a page, and say something like, "This is a $1,000. Can you imagine what $1,000,000 looks like? That is what was donated by Mr and Mrs So-and-so!"
Then it's less work on your part and more up to the persons imagination, drawing them into the card forcing them to 'interact' with it.
