Hi everyone,

I am going to be graduating in the spring from college and am trying to make a ist of places to apply for a job. I'm not interesting in freelancing, rather I would like to work in the art department of a company. The trouble is that I don't know which companies have their own art departments and which ones hire out.

To give you an idea of what I'm looking for, I'm interested in branding, corporate logo, and packaging. I've looked at design firms but most of these ar small groups of people that I don't think would welcome a 'fresh out of college' kid like me. I'd rather start out as a junior designer somewhere and move up gradually.

Also, I would be looking for employment in or around Vancouver. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The thing is, unless you have experience, you aren't going to start as a JD (unless Vancouver falls under the Canadian licensing program, in which case, I know nothing about it).

It's difficult to guess whether you pay your dues at a studio where you may get to work on many projects, even at a lowly level, or pay your dues at an in-house where you may get stuck scanning and clipping all day. I've found it very rare for a new grad with no real world portfolio to be hired as an in-house JD.

Nods. Most place ask for 2 years minimum for a junior role. You have to have experience to get experience. I know, doesn't make much sense...You just keep trying until you get lucky. Like me! Took me 8 months to find a job, but I got one. Then moved up steadily.
