Here's the wiki on surrealism: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surrealism

You might consider hand writing your cover page instead of using a font. That would give you more control over things. :)

Why does the font itself have to scream surrealism? Your overall design can, correct. If you need to convert a "normal" font to outlines and break it apart, distort it (not literally through the "distort" filter.) Play with the font, play with pathfinder, transparencies, overlap, etc. until you get something that feels surreal.

very good point, Craig.

Oldat29 - the only way that your drawing skills will get better is through regular use. Be patient and give it a try! It's definitely time well spent. ;)

Following the link morea provided, I found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surrealist_techniques#Calligramme

"A calligramme is a text or poem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poem), of a type, or the word for which was, developed by Guillaume Apollinaire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guillaume_Apollinaire) in 1918 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918), in which the words or letters make up a shape, particularly a shape connected to the subject of the text or poem."

Might that help? You most easily could develop a calligramme in Illy, I would think...

(Cool link, morea...but lunch is over and I have to apply the grindstone back to my nose.)

Instead of thinking about which typeface you use, you could think about actually making your text 'surreal'... animate/humanise them, or make them do something you wouldn't usually associate with text?

just a thought.

Read about surrealism in an art history book then apply their practices to your font selection.
