I really like the "feel" of this template. I'm working on a reader cd for a fantasy fiction book (the site is http://www.stephanieweeks.com) that will include character sketches, a teaser for the second book, author interview, Solon Book of Shadows (new) translations of all the spells in the book from Latin to English, etc. Of course I will devise it much more in a celtic manner, but I like the darkness, the light highlighting the carpets (which I'd replace w/ the book illustrations), etc. I'm not too proficient with the lighting effects in PS so I really don't know where to start. Not asking for someone to "do" it for me...just maybe point me in the right direction. Thanks!

I think it's just done by either gradients from transparent to black or making a solid new layer of black above the images and then rubbing it out whilst reducing opacity, but then again I may be wrong.

Unfortunately...it didn't work...I can't get the lighting right no matter what I do. I don't care for themes much either but this book is fairly theme based.
edited to add: Its not for a website...its for a reader cd that will be distributed at book signings, too indie bookstores, etc.

Russell Brown has some great tutorials <u>Russellbrown</u> (http://www.russellbrown.com/body.html) Click on 'More Tips' —>scroll down to 'Painting with Light.' also go <u>here</u> (http://movielibrary.lynda.com/html/modPage.asp?ID=131) and scroll down to 'Photoshop CS' lighting with layers. This is a quick time file that is also good. Last time I went there the server was down, but perhaps it will be up soon.

This may not even be close...
• I'd do your entire image without the dark shading
• Create a layer (Using Photoshop?) on the top, fill it black.
• Draw selections around the areas that you want to be lightened
• Switch to quickmask mode (hit the Q key)
• Once you are in quickmask mode use a Gaussian Blur to fade the edges of your selection
• Switch back to normal mode and delete your sections, it should give you faded spots in your black layer
• You may need to invert your selection depending on what you want deleted
Hope this helps, shoot me a message if you need clarification.

BBB-thanks for the link...good tutorial.
Nubbin-I'll give that a go tomorrow as well. Too beat tonight after a swim and two hours of tennis! LOL
My initial draft really sucks. Sis loves it...but really...it is pretty much ground up crud. Can't get the perception or lighting right.
I have that project and a logo to finish and am stuck again. Story of my life as of late

i think you can get this effect without using any lighting effects but with a mask instead.
try this and see if it works.
-put your image in a say layer 1.
-create layer 2 and fill with black.
-go under 'layer' to 'add layer mask' then 'reveal all'
-get the eraser tool and adjust your settings...i would suggest a low opacity to start.
-simply start erasing the areas desired.
hope that helps.
