I'm laying out a book for a client in quark 7.3 on my mac. (Garamond font) I've never come across this before... In the word Chief's the f and the ' are running together. Is this a ligature? Is there a way to correct this? I'm still learning the whole book layout process so any help would be appreciated!
:) Thanks

just up the kerning to +5 or less just to give it a hair of a space.

Curious: are you using a good commercial font? Do you have metrics or optical character spacing on?

Or turn off ligatures. I forget where to do that in Quark...but I'm preety sure it's in Prefs.

It's not a ligature. Ckret's suggestion was the way to go. You can also add the kerning pair to the kerning table in Quark (something I wish InDesign had), so it would affect every instance of that pair, in case it comes up often.

I read it as, "the Fs are running together" Missed the apostrophe. My bad.
