Hi everyone this is my first post on this great site. Im a graphic designer who works for a clothing company where I design anything from stubbie coolers to cool designs on shirts. I often have questions but really havent found much help by just surfing around so hopefully some of you guys work in a similar industry and could help me out? My first one is that I need help to draw a face - not too bad -but this time I need the shadows and highlights to depict the facial features (so no facial features actually in the pic just shadows) - I've spent about 3 days trying to get the right look with no luck-can anyone help? All comments appreciated! Jaz:D

Hi Jazzy and welcome.

Have you tried taking photos of your own face in dramatic lighting? Try it at night or in a dark room using a torch or spotlight. Doing it in a mirror might be useful. Use a tripod and don't use a flash!

Then draw from the photos.

Welcome aboard, Jazzy!!

Don't expect your face drawings to be fantastic if you've only been at it for 3 days. It takes some practice to figure out just how the shapes and shadows play off each other. Just keep drawing and drawing, and your skills will most definitely improve.

Thanks for the welcomes and posts guys! I will try and find a pic that I can use to draw the shadows from and see how it goes. Im proficient using Adobe Photoshop CS3, Illustrator CS3, Coreldraw X3 and Indesign CS although I dont use Indesign at work only the other 3. Ive tried using the threshold in P/shop, but didnt work too well and I tried to inverse a pic and see if I get the some shadows to work from then but this is a technique which did work - but not too well. I'll keep plodding on, have work tomorrow so it has to be worked out one way or another!!! Thanks again
Jazzy;)

Welcome Jazzy, Am new too and from Oz. Just joined this morning!
When I read yr first post, I thought of manipulating the image in Photoshop playing with contrasts and levels, then tracing in Illustrator... but I guess your playing with threshold in quite similar...

High contrast photo then incrementally push the lights lighter and the darks darker by using a curves adjustment layer. You could also look at your channels and see if any of them are somewhat close to what your looking for. If one is then duplicate it and apply value adjustments(curves, threshold) to it directly. A combination of those methods should give you what your looking for – welcome to the forum.

Well after about 2 more goes at getting the face right I finally did it - phew - glad that ones over but learnt alot in the process. Came across a great tutorial written by a guy who draws vector art for a living and learnt about using 5 colours to draw in the tones and highlights in a face and then subtracting what features I didnt want, worked a treat for this project and my boss was happy  now I am designing some sublimated shirts for a sports team which is quite fun, does anyone else out there do this kind of work too?

I think we all do this kind of work at one time or another.

Lesson #1 at GDF.
Do not use the font that shall not be named. Even if you use a lovely large cap in another colour, it is still the font that shall not be named.

Where about's in NZ? So many NZer's are going to Oz now. The money really is amazing. It's about double what you make here doing the same work I heard.

I'm working for a printing company doing designs for their clients as well as prepress stuff. It pays the bills.
