Hello all-
I have made a full switch to doing design for the equestrian industry since there are about 3 of us who are focused there (don't y'all get any ideas haha). Got a call for this one last night. Had to whip it out. if you are in the industry, then you know that her name being partially obscured won't affect anyone. She is Lance Armstrong big in our world... haha what do you guys think.. what would you have done differently?

It is a 12x19.5" poster, so the small text on the right is large enough to read at 100% darn these GDF size limitations :D

Nice! :)

I can't read the body copy, but the shape is fine. I especially like one hand in front and one hand behind the headline.

I like a lot. :) Colors, screens, typography, all smooth and clean. There's nothing not to like about it.

I'm not a big fan of ragged left text. Have you tried putting your copy on the left side of the image and left justify/ragged right the text?
And keeping with the "we read left to right" concept, flip your footer horizontally to have your footer copy on the left, and the box image on the right.
Then send the left hand to the back and bring the right hand to the front of the headline copy.

I think if you tried these suggestions you might find it flows a bit more naturally.

just my opinion.

That would look wierd with the hand furthest back in front of the text and the forward most hand behind it. IMO

the left justified text idea isn't bad though, would be interested to see how that looks.

Now that you mention, you're right, that might look odd. At first glance, I was looking at the copy, not the image. nice catch.

I like this! I'm in the horse world and trying to branch into equine graphics. Here in the mid-west, designs can be anything but tasteful...this is great!

I also thought all of the smaller info text might be better left justified on the left side of the subject but it appears as though there probably isn't enough room?

yeah, that was the issue, the left side didn't allow enough space. I would have been happier to get rid of it all together. I did make an adjustment to the bottom strip, got rid of the 'blue border' on the edges...

I think either both hand should be behind or in front of the text.

the inconsistency just bothers me.

REally? That's the one thing that caught my eye right off the bat and I loved that.

I think removing the borders on the edges was a good choice and well done.

the hands on opposing sides thing works (for me) if i'm looking at the figure, but not if i'm trying to read the name.
maybe people know the name so well that they won't actually be looking at it, but...

i really like how the body text is right aligned and (roughly) follows her figure.

(ps obviously i'm new here. hi everybody!)

yeah, she is a big name, so the fact that the name was partially obscurred didn't matter. but what I don't understand is, why would the hand in the forground be behind the text and the hand in the background be in front. a few people have mentioned that. i doesn't make sense to me, but maybe i am missing something?

i think the point of having the hands on opposing sides of the text is to add depth and originality (it's less common).
but i think the difference is distracting if you're looking at the name. not that the name is illegible, but that it's weird looking - takes the brain (mine, anyway) a minute to figure out what's going on. distracting not in a good way.

OK...

so, I did it just to illustrate the point.
by putting the hand in the background in front of the words it throws her body into a weird optical illusion.

Dot said 'i think the point of having the hands on opposing sides of the text is to add depth and originality (it's less common).'

there is a reason it is less common. It is hard on the eye because it doesn't physically make sense.

ARIAL BLACK! ;)

I like it, the hand in front of the text adds a lot of depth.

i didn't mean that you should switch which hand is in front and which is in back (obviously it totally doesn't work physically) i mean that either both hands should be in front or both hands should be in back (i would go for both hands in front).
conceptually the way you had it originally works, but it bothers my eye. maybe i am alone in this.

Nah, you're not taking crazy pills... Corey introduced the idea of switching the order of the hands/text before he realized how weird it would look.

and dot, you're not alone.

She should be behind the text, her being half half is visually confusing

ZippyTheWonderMonkey

I don't see her being half in front and half in back to be wrong or visually confusing at all.

Actually, if she was behind the text you wouldn't be able to see that she's giving the thumbs up, that would actually anger me not being able to see what she's doing, I think this is a good solution.

while it kind of seems that this is just a subjective thing, and so people will have different responses to it (which i guess means there's no right or wrong answer?), i wonder if some of the different responses have to do with what people are paying most attention to.
like i said before, if i'm looking at the picture then i have one response, if i'm reading the name i have different one.

other than that, going back and forth with "i like it" "i don't like it" doesn't seem that useful... since it doesn't seem like a decision that should/can be made by majority decision.

I like it. One idea... maybe make the box on the bottom.. the edges softer and blur the back a bit more make the front really stick out! But to be honest its nice im just throwing other ideas out there. Dont take anything personally :)

I hate to be picky, but the "B" in Beerbaum could be moved over just a tad to be in-line with Michaels. GREAT WORK THOUGH, love the layout!
