I'm looking to further my skills in handwritten text, focusing in on the handwritten calligraphy that you often see done by skilled tattoo artists.

I'm sure many of these people learn this on their own via trial and error, but if there are any really good books that can give me tips, tricks, and a better understanding of what needs to go into the thought process of laying these things out, I would be greatly appreciative.

There are plenty of books, maybe even at your public library, about calligraphy. It's best if you flip through them to see what method they use for teaching the way to practice calligraphy, and pick the one that seems clearest and most suited to your working style. You usually find them right near the graphic arts books in the book stores.

Additionally, search illuminated letters such as:

Are you also interested in Old English and Blackletter? They are pretty popular among tattoo artists. Have a Google :)
