Hi! I am a Norwegian student who seriously is considering going to the US next year. I have decided to start on a bachelor-degree in Graphic design(although I am not sure I can afford the whole degree. Might just take the first one or two years).
Anyway... I need some advice in what school to pick. There is a LOT of schools to choose from, and since I have little knowledge about the American schools, I would really appreciate suggestions or recommandations about schools, preferebly in the Minneapolis-area. Is there a big difference between the Colleges and Universities when it comes to Major in graphic design?
I have been checking out some schools so far: Northwestern College, MN, University of Minnesota, Duluth, College of Visual Arts, MN and Chabot College, CA

Recommandations of schools elsewhere is also very welcome.

Thanks a lot!

i'm not from MN so I won't be much help. But out of curiosity, why MN? I would think you would strive for New York, Dallas, Los Angles, San Francisco or Atlanta... One of the major art areas in the US.

I guess the main reason is that I have relatives and people I know in that area. It is far away from home, you know;)

But I would really like the names of some schools. The financial part is also a factor. I can't afford more than about 30k per year. Housing is also a consern for me, since I have NO knowledge of where to go or what to look for. The best would be a campus dorm or something..

Minneapolis College of Art and Design
College of Visual Arts - St. Paul

University of Minnesota (not sure what their program is like)
Art Institute of Minneapolis - not to be confused with Minneapolis Institute of Arts

There are several local colleges as well, but not sure what the rating on their Graphic Design programs are.

MCAD is spendy, but has a great reputation.

As mentioned in the first post, I have done some research on some of them. But do you know which are the better ones? The MCAD deadline has run out, so I guess that one is out of the picture. Do you know anyone who goes to any of the other? Are there anyone here who goes there?

Welcome Teejay. There is a college about 90 miles east of Minneapolis that has a very good graphic design program: University of Wisconsin Stout (http://www.uwstout.edu/) in Menomonie, Wisconsin. I know one of our members, "Cyan Ide" goes there. I think it's a good idea as someone in a new area, especially from outside of the country, to live in the dorms. What a great way to meet many people and get the whole college experience. If you have relatives in Mpls, I'm sure you would be able to catch a ride with someone there for weekends. Here's a rundown from US News (http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/usnews/edu/college/directory/brief/drglance_3915_brief.php). I'm sure there are some good options in Minneapolis, I just am not as familiar with them.

I totally agree with the living in dorms. Both easier to get a place to live, not to mention the great way to get the college experience. It also seems not to expensive, http://www.uwstout.edu/admissions/costs.shtml. I will be a undergraduate student, right? Might seem like a silly question but the system in US differs a lot from the Norwegian (where by the way all state colleges and universities are free of charge). Will add this to my list of potential schools. Thanks a lot=)

Yes, I'm assuming you don't already have a college degree. The first four years of college (or however long it takes you to get your Bachelor's degree) are considered undergraduate. After you get your bachelors, you can further your eduction and earn a masters degree and then a doctorate.

What's in america that you can't find in europe? Have you tried searching a school there? Would give you a cheaper flight that's for sure.

I went to the frigid north of Minnesota to Bemidji State University. I graduated in 2004 and really enjoyed the classes and teachers. They have some programs not offered anywhere else and some at this price. It's a great value at what they have to offer. They have a new building and I wish I was able to take classes there now. They offer both digital and print backgrounds. They also have a program which envolves multimedia and animation, which I took. Take a look at it and visit if you can. It has a great campus which is located right next to the lake.

Well.. I don't like British English, I am tired of Europeans (especially Norwegians) and I just love the US and the people there. Been to the US three times and would really like to spend more time there. You are right about the flights, but then again, I am not going to fly too much back and forth;)

Will certainly check it out, Mynock. Thanks. Am I right saying that the deadlines are really closing up and/or are already dead? In Norway we have better time;)

Hey TeeJay! So are you signed up at Stout yet? ;)

Haven't applied yet. But will soon. In the US, can you apply for many colleges and choose from the ones you get accepted at, or is it as in Norway that you have to go to your primary choice if you get accepted at it?

It's been a while for me but I'm almost positive you can apply for as many as you want (or can afford the application fees for) and then choose where you want to go from those that accept you.

Today I applied online to UW Stout. On Friday is my TOEFL-test, which I hope goes well (got a 97,2% on the Listening test on CD-rom) I don't know if I will apply to any other colleges/universities in the US, but should probably have one in Norway as a backup-plan.

Thanks for advice!

Me too. Except I graduated in '97. I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a MS in Ed though, not a GD degree.
