I wanna go. The entrance is steap, though. Anyone lucky enough to be going on the company's dime?

Not offended! I assumed that everyone would pick the third option. I would.
Anyways, I know, it's really expensive. I'll have to see how well I do with work the next couple of weeks. there's going to be some great speakers there (Stefan Bucher = fuggin awesome). there's even a page called:

I'm actually a speaker at the conference for a fourth time. Be sure to introduce yourself if you attend.

Option four as long as it's not made from beef from the recent recall.

I ordered the beef chow fun. ETA? :D
I'm not going because I can't afford to fly to the states and my company couldn't give toss on what my design skills are like. Just as long as I've got a few tricks up my sleeves I'm good.
I will try and get them to pay for 1 design conference locally this year though. I've always gone to these things on my own money. But I figure I might as well try.

I sent it third class mail...it should get to you in about 45 days.

Yeah, it can't hurt to ask

Thanks. It should arrive just when I've forgotten about it. I hope it can get past customs with all the creatures that will be living in it by then.

I have just submitted my proposal (more like my begging and pleading letter) to have company pay for this. Would be awesome.

would love to, hell its in my home city, I'm ten minutes away. Unfortunately two reasons I can't go include...cost and I'll be in New York. HOW runs up against the National Stationery Show, which a lot of other designers are likely to be at as well.

How does HOW expect designers to pay for this? They have to know most don't make much and how cheap most companies are.
I was hoping one of the speakers would hire me to do their presentation and then decide that I absolutely have to be there with them in case anything goes wrong. No such luck yet.

Maybe that's why they call it HOW.

Well it went over well with my employer, not so well with my wife. That's the weekend of our wedding anniversary...so I won't be going.
I peaked around the site wondering if they have a similar conference in Canada, anyone know?

I saw that you were listed jeff. :) Wish I could catch it.
I'd love to go but I don't want to spend the $ on it...and I doubt my company will send me. I can't even get them to upgrade from cs to cs3 and we need to badly. Its ok, they sent me in 2005 (lol wearing the shirt) because it was in chicago. :) Actually I later found out that my boss who sent me let me spend all sorts of company dime (wacom tablet, fonts, the conference, etc.) because he knew he was leaving the company. Of which, he told me to follow because the situation is going to change for the worse - stupid me i'm still here and he was 100% correct. I miss my old boss - he understood the value of design and didn't control me like a crazy fool!
Anyways, those going have a great time! Get all you can from it! If my business launches and I get some success, I may try and go next year.

I do meta conferencing. That's when you use many sources to access the material presented at the conference. I usually wait a few days until after the conference to start these. Here's how I do it:
Hop over to Google Blog Search (http://blogsearch.google.com/), Technorati (http://technorati.com), or Ice Rocket (http://www.icerocket.com/), and type in "how conference" with the city or year, and then read all the highlights.
Then I'll hop over to Flickr (http://flickr.com/), type in "how conference," and look at the sights.
I'll check out the speakers list (http://www.howconference.com/speakers.asp), and look at the different topics being covered. If an author interests me, I'll check out their site to find articles they've written. If I'm really interested, I'll check out their books on Amazon.
If I need to find a very specific presentation, I'll buy the $40 for the video (http://www.howconference.com/session_download.asp) of a single presentation. If I wanted it all, I'd buy the $300 mp3 download (http://www.fwmagazines.com/product/570/44) which includes all sessions.
Check out the vendors/sponsors (http://www.howconference.com/sponsors.asp) page and see if any of their new products suit my needs. So that's what I do. Personally, I'm not a fan of conferences for so many reasons, such as costs and environmental impact. Granted, meta conferencing is missing a few of key elements of normal conferencing (e.g. face to face contact), but I seem to find what I need when I need it.

For me its not about that. For me I love meeting other designers and talking about design ( i don't get to do that too much here). I think being there is better. ALL the resources and reading we want, as you've mentioned are at our finger tips. Its about interaction. If you don't think that is important, cool, to each our own. Sometimes though I do feel its a bit over-rated. But I would rather meet other designers at a place like this, than at an AIGA drunk fest.

LOL. I never thought about that before, but I do think AIGA meet-ups are pretty much a room full of drunks. Every time we basically sat in a bar night and we never talked about design.
