Adobe Systems released on Wednesday a new 3D graphics program intended to help Web designers create new types of environments.

The program, dubbed Atmosphere, consists of a set design tools for creating 3D Web images. In addition, the company released the free Atmosphere Player for viewing images, either as part of a Web page or in an offline document saved in Adobe's widespread portable document format (PDF).

The initial version of Atmosphere works only with Microsoft's Windows operating system and Internet Explorer browser. Bahman Dara, senior product manager for Adobe, said the company is considering support for Apple Computer's Mac operating system in future versions of Atmosphere Player, but "it doesn't look like the audience is big enough for version 1."

The program is designed to allow graphics professionals to create 3D environments that are more engaging and interactive than typical 2D Web graphics--and that are much easier to put together than the complex visual schemes used by computer games and other common 3D applications.

Atmosphere includes elements such as a "physics engine," which determines how an object moves in and reacts with its environment. That would typically require painstaking separate programming.

"One of the main reasons 3D hasn't taken off on the Web is because it's so hard to create this stuff," Dara said. "Our goal was to make this really accessible. If you're a competent Illustrator user, you should be able to be productive in Atmosphere in a few hours." Illustrator is Adobe's 2D graphics program.

A number of businesses have already produced Web content with a beta version of Atmosphere, creating tools such as an interactive seating chart for a concert venue and a virtual museum tour.

"We want to promote 3D for the average Web designer to give them tools to create something that looks really good but has a development cycle much shorter than a game," Dara said.

Atmosphere is available now for $399 for the full version, or $99 for the student/teacher version. Atmosphere Player is available for free download from Adobe.

Well Maya is for free now but the thing that Adobe has is that darn plugin.

They are really leaving Mac users out of the picture just because of the Digital Video moves Apple is making. This sucks for us because it is estimated that 80% of Graphic Designers still work on Mac Web designers might be more like 20% on Mac but dam that just doen't smell right.

Not only that but Windows won't update IE as a stand alone anymore. You know as a designer I am really begining to hate the lock hold Microsoft has on what we can do. We can't use CSS fully because IE.

At first when I heard this I was like wow. But now I see that Adobe is developing for Windows more than anything and Mac users have to take a back seat. That is BS, they will drop Photoshop if sales become slow on the Mac I can see it now.

This is more bad new than good news. Dam!<img border="0" src= "smileys/smiley6.gif">

I'd like to see how long it takes to download a site built in it. Last time I checked, the world still wasn't running entirely on broadband. So the 56k users are just going to have to suffer for something like that. I bet you probably will only be able to look at on site at a time too. Hopefully they start thinking about things before they release a version 2.0. There is this company called anark that has a web based 3D graphics and interactive program out, but it's lacking the essential design elments on the creation side. It didn't even have text support in the last version. You have to create outside and import almost everything into it. Anyways - Those are my two cents on the matter

Hmm...I wonder if the software supports optimized bitmap or vector-based output? Or both?

I have a handy little program called Vecta 3D that outputs .swf (Flash) files. It simply requires an Illustrator file (saved in .ai 3.0 version) and the program itself allows you to rotate, scale, and animate the object. Lastly, you select the amount of frames and image size (which is scalable). Very easy to use.

Although I am a PC user...I hate MicroSoft. Someone needs to chop themup, and let the competition force lowercosts, and quite possibly a universal OS.I love the concept of a fully integrated OS and the aesthetic beauty of a Mac but hate the one-button mouse. I swear, someday there should be a universal OS where compatability problems are but an annoying memory.

lindows.com is pushing hard for what REDeye is talking about. Even Linux itself is quite nice.

I wish I had DSL so I could download these.

*Adds DSL below iPod on long list of things to get*

BTW, I think this Atmosphere prog seems like a waste.
