Ok, this is very similar to another post that was here recently. My boss yelled at me because he says I am defensive when he "shows" me how to do things and that I should watch and keep my mouth shut... RRR! He is not a designer, but a franchize owner with now creative background but plays with the programs and takes over all my work. Is it wrong to get frusterated when he is telling me how to properly trace copyrighted logos ripped off companies web sites and how to make a terribly ugly design, the wrong way... I hate my job...

Does anyone know of any forums or websites or anything that has specific literature on what is legal and illegal as far as recreating copyrighted logos? I am at wit's end here...

There is no gray area when it comes to recreating copyrighted materials. It's just plain illegal. No ifs ands or buts. I think you know this already. ;)

another link (http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap5.html).

And this one (http://www.bitlaw.com/trademark/infringe.html) discusses trademark infringement.

A little more background would actually be helpful. What exactly are these logos being used for? There are a lot of things which we may have to do which are technically illegal, but necessary and acceptable, depending on the nature of the publication. If you are designing ads for the company in question, or perhaps they are a sponsor for an event and need to be recognized, you will very often run into the situation where your contacts simply do not have the logo in question. Whether they are merely a dealer/representative of a larger organization (ie, car dealer, real estate agent, etc.), or they are the a smaller company who simply don't know what they're doing. The company may not have an art department, or may have had somebody design a logo for them 10 years ago, and they never knew enough to keep the vector eps file instead of the 300x200 pixel gif. Whatever the case may be, you may be called upon to recreate, or "vectorize" a logo, illegal or not.

Aah - I get that. For two years I have been telling my boss we can't rip off designs from other people...I'm noticing a change now though I think he's got it.

Just keep trying. And remember, if someone sees the copied work that you have been told to do, you are not in the wrong, your boss is.
