Where do you guys go to get your SWOP proofs made? Do you go to an outside printer or did you buy your own printer for proofing?

We have/use an Epson 9800 for proofing. Extremely accurate color.

I'm a solo designer. I was hoping there was an external way to get a proof without spending a huge wad of cash. But I guess it's always a good business investment. I was looking at the smaller 3800 since that's actually affordable.

Epson 7880 here and ditto on the colour accuracy.

Do you use colorburst for color matching, or do you find it to be unnecessary?

I certainly think so. The actual cost per print of the 7880 is quite minimal. The initial outlay is pricey but the machine life combined with the colour quality swayed it for me.

Also, what do you use such large width printers for?

We do use the ColorBurst RIP. We use that printer for proofs and for printing any final large items that we only need one or two of, like display posters. The 9800 goes up to 44" wide.

You can call a local printer and see about making arrangements for SWAP proofs. Our company used to do that but then bought...an EPSON and now we do them in house.

I actually tried that but most don't seem to know what I'm talking about. I think I'm just going to buy an epson printer, but now I'm not sure what size I need. so far I haven't used the printer much, but if I get some more print work I'll definitely need a way to proof. Those huge machines are insanely expensive though. I'm thinking the 17" would be fine. Anyone know why it might not be big enough?

You could try expressproof.com. The publisher I work for was referred to them by our printer. Their backend is a little weird but all-in-all it's pretty straight forward. We upload PDF's, they send us SWOP standard proofs. So far we have no complaints. I know they use Epson's but I'm not sure what RIP they're using to create the halftone.
