Where can I find any Japanese fonts, which I don't have to pay for?

There's also a number of fonts on my font library that are displayed in Japanese (I think) but when I try using them they turn out to be in english, do I need to activate some language settings for them to work as Japanese type?

did you search the web at all?

I found these right off the bat on a google search.

I don't know Japanese so I can't verify content or copyright issues .. that will be up to you ;)

There are a number of Japanese fonts installed as part of OSX, and as well there are quite a number of OpenType fonts that include Japanese ideograms.

To use them, in the menu bar choose Apple > System Preferences > International. In the Language tab make sure Japanese shows in the Languages list, then click the Input Menu tab. Check the keyboard layouts, shortcuts, source options and whether or not to show the input menu in the menu bar (recommended).

That sets everything up at the system level. You don't mention what software you're using...make sure it can handle CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) character sets.

Good. you should be fine then. From the Illy CS3 Help:

Display Asian type options

By default, Illustrator hides Asian type options in the Character panel, Paragraph panel, OpenType panel, and Type menu.

Choose Edit > Preferences > Type (Windows) or Illustrator > Preferences > Type (Mac OS).
Select Show Asian Options, and click OK.
You can also control how font names are displayed (in English or in the native language) by selecting or deselecting Show Font Names in English.
Note: Your operating system must support the languages in which you wish to work. Consult your system software manufacturer for more information.
