I act as a print broker regularly for my clients. I just received 4/c #10 window envelopes from an online print vendor that I use regularly. The envelopes received have the window on the left side and I sent proofs to the client with the window on the right side. I stupidly didn't check their templates first, as I assumed that a standard window envelope has the window on the right side.
I'm delivering the job tomorrow. I'm hoping they will just accept them as is, but I am worried they are going to bounce it. I'm going to try to convince them that the left side is the standard, which when looking at other envelope printers, left side seems to be the norm.
Anyhow, thanks for letting me vent and if you have any advice to how to handle the situation, I would appreciate it.
I'm already beating myself up for not looking into this further, so please go easy on the flames... ;)
I wouldn't lie to them about it. Always a bad idea. Fess up to your mistake. Ask them if they can use them as they are, but if they can't you are kind of out of luck.

I agree with Riya. And depending on your relationship with your client, I can't imagine that it would do anything but enhance their view of your ethics and thus cement the relationship even further.
It also seems like a fairly innocent mistake, although it's never safe to assume, but I'd have to agree, at least in terms of the mailers I receive, that the majority of windows are on the right, not on the left. I can't think of a one I've received where the the window is on the left, quite honestly.

What if all their invoices have the addressee on the right?

Anybody have a source they would be willing to point me towards? 4/C process, Quantity 1,000, that will print the window on the right in the low 200's $ price range? 4over & Action Envelope only offer left-sided windows.
They are actually a new client. I wouldn't mind swallowing the $200 if it comes down to that, but I would have to turn to a local printer to print these on the right side. It most likely will cost me an additional $200. Not sure what context my relationship will be going with this company, and/or if I will be getting much more work from them.

Actually, Action Envelope does offer (1) option for right hand side window. Just so you don't think I'm crazy, all of the other ones have windows on the left. http://www.actionenvelope.com/ae/control/category/~category_id=WINDOW (http://www.actionenvelope.com/ae/control/category/%7Ecategory_id=WINDOW)
I wish 4over would have put a picture of their window envelope on their web site. That would have helped greatly with this faux pas.
I'll let you know how things go. I wish I put a bigger mark up on the job...

well i just looked through all the mail on my desk, all windows are on the bottom left. i checked with my online printer & they only offer bottom left window as well.
i think if you explain what has happened & ask if they can use them they just might.
keep us up to date. good luck.

Same here. Same with all the envelopes we use at work (Just checked the boxes of them in the overflow room).
That would suck to have to eat that many, but at least you would get your fiber for the month. Make sure you put some soy sauce on them or something...

Everything tastes great sauteed in olive oil and fresh chopped garlic. ;)
Sounds like an honest mistake. Your client might even understand. Whatever you do, don't try to con them. It'll likely come back to bite you in the ass.

Well the good thing is apparently these envelopes did not have to be converted because of bleeds because $200 for 4/c env. is pretty darn cheap. :)

Just wanted to say that everything turned out just fine so all of the worrying for nothing but it sure did teach me a lesson. They do their invoicing in Quickbooks which puts the Bill to info on the left.

Yes, no bleeds, just color logo.

I thought envelope windows were on the left as standard. It's only now that you mention it I think I might have seen some on the right before. But we don't have any right window envelopes around here. Never seen an order for them either.

The standard that our suppliers offer is left side placement. For a small
premium per thousand we can also get right side placement. It's not
that unusual in this area, but it's not what I'd call common either.
Mostly has to do with billing department needs I'd guess.

That's weird cuz I just went through a stack of mail from over the weekend and I'd say it was pretty evenly split on which side the window is on.

I wish 4over would have put a picture of their window envelope on their web site.4over sucks. They screwed up almost every job we sent them and then told us that the quality was good enough. The last job we did with them was a 4/4 with spot UV business card with rounded corners on 16pt. They sent 4/4 with full UV on 14pt and about a 1/16" nicked off the corners...then had the audacity to say that it was good enough. Try https://www.viaprintfirm.net/store/home.php instead. Great quality and fast turn around, plus, they've never screwed up a job with us yet and we've been dealing with them for about 2 years.

I've found that if you send them anything outside their "standard" type of printing they screw it up. So if I have a custom fold, or a trim size that deviates from their defaulted options I usually go someplace else. If it fits within their norm, I usually don't have a problem. Thanks for the link to ViaPrint! Definitely will be checking them out. :)
