well I guess it has to happen every now and then. The company I have been working for for 2 years informed me a week ago that my position would be cut from a full time position to a part time position.
Then yesterday morning, I was informed that this would be the last week of "full" 20 hr weeks and that if I wanted to continue working here, it would be on 8hrs a week plus "on call as needed".
Sorry, 8 hrs doesn't feed the family so I have to decline the generous offer.
I have my pportfolio in hand, polished up the resume and gave aquent and career services at my old school a call and got on craigs list and started sending out resumes.
Today is day 2 of looking in earnest for a new job and I already have three leads, one from Aquent, one from Careerservices and one call back from a resume I sent on craigslist (thanks craig).
So yesterday's sheer panic has morphed into a good exciting feeling, like standing too long on the high dive before jumping in. I am scared to ****, but in the kind of way that produces hard work and focus... not dread, panic, and depression.
wish me luck!

Best wishes. There are some helpful job search tips in our frequently discussed topics (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33048) thread.
At least your boss gave you some notice. I hope that you find something better quickly and that it doesn't stress you too much. Things tend to happen for a reason, and I hope that something better comes from it. :)

Thanks for the kind words ladies and gents. I'm sure this will all lead to better opportunities (maybe some with health benefits too? asking too much?)
My position got cut ... Why? there is the obvious reason: real estate market tanked. A big percentage of our business revolved around the real estate and land development industries, so when that tanked earlier this year A LOT of our clients went belly up. I saw one of our RE clients working at a grocery store a few weeks ago.
But I have to say that the REAL reason is that when the market shifted as it did, our sales team threw up their hands and declared defeat, instead of looking to bring in new clients from different industries.
the company owner, who should be steering the ship (it's his ship) when the weather gets rough, instead decided to take a month off "to pursue his fine art career" and spends his days locked up in his office "creating" instead of schmoozing clients, and bringing in the large accounts he used to. to quote:
"I just haven't been in the right space to really get out there and sell like I used to, I'm hoping working on my own artwork for a while will help me cope"
space? cope? did some alien just replace my boss with an 18 yr old conceptual artiste? dude, while you are busy finding yourself, your company is about to tank.
I'm actually glad I'm leaving now that I spell it all out.

Sounds like your boss would be better suited to grow a goatee and read beat poetry in a coffee shop somewhere, not run a print business.

I'm actually planning to buy a whole case of ramen tonight. It's much cheaper if you buy a box. Just so you know ;) If you can get it from an asian supermarket, even better!
