I just happened to stumble upon this forum while searching for how to set my rates for freelance. You see, I have been having some difficulty with a client that doesn't seem to think my rates are reasonable, which I kindly explained to him were actually cut in half compared to what my normal rates would be. I'm cutting him loose and this disagreement comes with my final invoice. Seems that he doesn't understand that printing costs are not all he pays for!

Anyway, before I go off on a rant, I just wanted to say that once I discovered the site I thought it might be a good idea to sign up. It's nice to find others of my kind, and I expect that this forum will provide some great resources. I hope to contribute when I can, and I thank this forum already for helping me justify the rates I have set for my work.

Welcome to GDF, m00nwater.

When you have a few moments, please check out the threads posted here (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=42); they explain just about everything you need to know about GDF.

We can not discuss pricing here, but there are some threads posted in the "frequently discussed topics" thread (which you will find in the link above) that can help you set your rates. It sounds like it might be a good idea to cut that particular client off. Did you have a contract to spell out the costs and all that ahead of time? It's highly recommended, and accepted industry wide as a standard business practice. (There's more information about contracts in the FDT thread, too.)

If you're not familiar with vBulletin forum software there are some great tips to help get you acquainted posted here (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28801).

Enjoy your stay. :)

I kind of imagined there was somewhere in the world that people understood that "artistic flair" (otherwise known as being a quirky weirdo)...now it seems I found that place!

Nope. I graduated from Durham College in 2000. I'm a senior designer for a large corporation in Toronto and I have a handful of freelance clients I keep.

I love Kristen Wiig. I think Penelope is her best character, but I couldn't find a good shot of her for my av.

Kristen took over top spot from Molly Shannon, which was a big thing for me to say because Molly is (was) my all time favourite SNL cast member. As stupid a movie as it was, I could recite the dialogue from Superstar word for word due to the amount of times I have watched it. I went as Mary Katharine Gallagher for Halloween 3 times, twice in one year for 2 different parties.

well then you need to know about Booby Island it is a paradise that will be made up of graphic designers and governed by the "Boobie Island Graphic Council". We will allow certain family members and pets who can live in huts on the beach, but we all get nice offices, and will form a new school for up and coming designers. You can read more about it here Boobie Island Planning Thread (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2069)

Of course our offices will be furnished to our hearts content and at our discretion. There will be dialy buffets in different themes with a theme night every night. Tonight we will be serving the pasific ocean buffet theme. Drinking tonight is to be via coconut only.
