I've always wanted purple hair. The closest I was brave enough go was burgundy (customers in an fairly nice Italian restaurant don't really want their waitress to have bright purple hair for some reason). Most red-based dyes fade quickly though. My hair would only stay burgundy for a couple weeks.

Same experience here. The under side of my hair is burgundy right now, I only dyed in about 3 weeks ago and you can't see it really already. I never had luck with reds but always used them. I am just hoping I can get the blue dark enough that it doesn't look unprofessional.

Well, over the years I've had pretty much every colour imaginable, and it seems the only ones that don't get people questioning your employment are dark purples and burgundys. Blues are touchy, depends on how dark it is. If it's obviously a blue, it raises eyebrows, but if it's dark enough that it might be black, but it might be blue, nobody's quite sure unless they actually get a chance to have a good look at it, then you're golden. Even when I just had blue tips on blonde hair it raised a lot of attention. (don't even ASK about what I did for christmas). Just some things to think about if there's potential employment opportunities coming up when after you've done your colours.

See thats kind of what I am going for, I talked to the lady about slate blue with a brighter blue highlight in it. I just dont want to go into a job interview and have them be like sorry we dont like you blue haired people, thanks anyways.... BTW, didn't get the job with the crazy lady who ripped apart my portfolio, but I have a second interview with another company tomorrow! Maybe they will like my hair lol!

A few years ago, I had gotten highlights that were fairly dramatic (medium-light blond on a fairly dark-haired brunette). I went camping with some friends and a few of us were planning a crazy hair day, so I bought a bottle of temporary purple hair dye, the kind that takes a couple weeks to fully wash out. It showed up quite well on the highlights, but not quite so much on the dark hair. So as the days and shampooings go by, the red part of the dye washed out first, leaving me with blue streaks. As the blue faded and the blond started showing through again, the two colors kinda cancelled each other out and it looked like I had chunky gray stripes through my hair.

I'd say go for it now, while you're still young enough to pull it off. I used to rock a nice mohawk, not too crazy, you could say it was a conservative mohawk, only an inch or so high, and now I miss it but my wife says I'm too old for mohawks now. At least I'll always have a killer driver's liscence photo to remember it by. Not that I'm old by any stretch, but when you're thirty you'll be much less likely to try to pull off blue hair. You're other option is to just give it 60 years, and I understand it starts to turn blue on its own?
When you ask if people will not want to hire you, are you interviewing for a fulltime job, or do you run your own business and you're talking about meeting with clients? If it's the former, you might want to wait until after your hired, since you're in the o-so-liberal midwest. If it's the latter, then it's probably not as big a concern.

Grey is better than the alternative, my hair is starting to turn flesh colored and smooth in the front and in the back. It's not bad, but enough to let me know that I probably won't be looking forward to grey hair.

I'm almost to the point of dying mine. I really don't want to. I hate the idea of chemicals. When I was 10, my mom gave me a home perm that she was supposed to leave in for 7 minutes but left in for 45. So, instead of a back to school perm, I got to start 5th grade bald. The hair that didn't fall out got shaved. I shared a room with my sister at the time. After the incident, I had to sleep on a cot in the living room with saran wrap and some stuff called climatress on my scalp so my hair would grow back semi-normal. I won't even put gel or hair spray in it now I'm so paranoid.
That being said, I say go blue!

If I looked any more like my mom (and my older sister for that matter) I'd think we were clones. The only difference is that I have my dad's bushy, curly hair. My sister does too, and we even sound alike. I can't tell you how many times people have asked if we were twins.

well when i was younger i did about everything i guy could do to his hair.
while in high school i rocked the billy idol spike but it was blue with red tips (school colors) i also had it black with yellow high lights for football season (steeler colors) if you're on the job hunt i say keep it simple and low profile for now. once you are working feel out (not feel UP) the employer then go crazy as you can get away with.

Ok, this comes from a person who has had proper hair care drilled into her by her aunt. Both my mom and my aunt when to school, my aunt made a carreer out of it for over 30 years.
3 weeks to redye hair = bad news.
Each time you dye your hair it opens the cuticles in the hair and makes it slightly weaker. If you dye your hair multiple times in too short of a period of time, then you could end up with a lot of breakage, thin hair, and even fallout if it's too burnt. It can also cause dye build up - in which case the dye doesn't take anymore and you have to "strip" your hair.
Ideally it is best to wait a minimum of 3 months to redye hair. Use vegetable based dyes, and definitely go to a salon. The salon use a whole different set of applications than you would get off the shelf in a department store. That is unless you have an aunt to take you to the beauty supply store that only sells to licensed people.
Else, depends on where you are located, who you are applying too, and how dramatic you want to go. There is a certain stigma with having brightly colored hair. It could very well be detrimental in your search for a good job.
If you land in a place that doesn't care, go for it.

I can see it, its pretty subtle - but detectable. Maybe y'all needs to git yer monitors checked.
Personally, in the interview setting, I could give two sh*ts what someone's hair looks like, as long as their attitude is professional and they've got crazy good skillz. But...
Whenever I see blue hair, I cant help but think of the phrase "blue-haired comic freak" - you know, the uber weirdos you see at the comic book and gaming conventions - the ones sporting Klingon masks or dressed up as their favorite "character". If you showed up to an interview with blue hair, and I was doing the interviewing, I would expect you to produce nothing less than a matching set of polyhedral dice from the dice bag secreted in your cleavage. A deck of Magic cards would be acceptable too, but they better be good. Then I would grill you on your knowledge of Star Trek TOS. The answers would be recorded to a sheet labeled TK-421 and filed with your resume between the feats and skills section of my players handbook. Then I would get a polaroid of you and me together which would earn a place of honor next to the polaroid of me with Vampirella at Comicon '99.

I have about 1,000 of those. Older editions too, mostly 3rd and 4th, with some Fallen Empires, Ice Ages, etc. Not a huge number of rares, though there are a few Serra Angels and a Gaia's Leige. Sorry, no Black Lotus. :(
Wait, I'm a former Magic geek but I've never had blue hair. What does this mean?

Hell, that's an interview that I'd ace... maybe I should dye my hair blue after all!
Actually, instead of dyeing my hair, can I just roll against my charisma? I've got a 16, what's the non-blue-hair modifier?

Well I wasn't going to admit it, but since someone else fessed up already, I'll joint the support group. I used to play way back too, also mostly 3rd and 4th edition (is that the "revised" edition? I used to have that whole set, I think I still have most) I think that's what I mostly had, and some Beta. I stopped playing around the time of Ice Age I think. I didn't have a black lotus either, but I had some card that gives you two turns in a row, which was supposed to be pretty valuable. I should find out if people are still playing that game, cause I have a huge case of them collecting dust somewhere.

What pissed me off is that by the time I'd invested the effort into creating some seriously killer decks, none of my friends liked playing anymore. I took my decks apart and arranged all my cards in alphabetical order and segregated by edition, and then cataloged each and every card by name, edition, color and condition. After finding out how much I could realistically get if I sold the whole set on eBay, I was quite discouraged. I then thought about selling individual cards or smaller sets of cards to various trading card sites that buy back cards, but the time involved in figuring out which site will give me more money for what cards just proved to be way too time consuming. They're now sitting in a box on the top shelf of my bookcase.
And yes, I believe 4th edition is 'revised'.
