Which is your favorite and why?

Im going with Bodoni.
gotta love the lower case "g". plus its contrast throughout the typeface is amazing.

thin - think
thick - thin.

Bodoni is nice, but I hadly ever use it. I don't particularly like it for body copy. I find it hard to read.

My standard is Garamond. But I've been using Caslon recently too. Palintino is nice and so is Giovanni. But my staple is Garamond.

I like Berkeley Oldstyle. I've also been liking Adobe Jenson (Pro) which comes with the CS2 suite.

I like Berling Antiqua! :)

I also use Garamond and Caslon.

I love Bodoni too, but I agree with buda that it can get hard to read at smaller sizes.

Some of my favorite staple serif fonts include: Garamond, Caslon, Stempel Schneidler. Sometimes Rotis serif if I'm feeling saucy and not-so-elegant.

Adobe Caslon Pro for serif and Hypatia for sans. Although the x-height on Hypatia is a bit low for body copy, it's fine for heads.

Our corporate face is Berkeley Oldstyle.

you guys ever try using grecko roman? it's in all caps format but with a bit of loose kerning looks very nice. Great for headline.

as for bodycopy i have to go with garamond.

also using a lot of bodoni (but i'm not so sure if Bodoni is the best type for bodycopy - great for display) and also book antiqua

what do you guys think?

I've used Bodoni as a header font twice today for a change.

Never heard of grecko roman. Neither has Google?!

sorry buda,
i forgot thats my nickname for the font.

maybe Greco will do? it is an all caps type.

Greco looks like Times New Roman to me. Am I missing something?

wow! great eye Buda!
never notice that before. damn they look quite the same....
but off course there's a small ifference. check the uppercase K. they have different leg. also on the uppercase G. aslight difference on the serifs and the counters. other than that they look like a family.

maybe we should start a thread on comapring type? heheh. should be fun

Being the deafult type for most of the word processing program, i think subcontiously i've been avoiding using times new roman... maybe thats why i never notice what you see Buda...

Garamond has beautiful curves and weight.

TNR has awful lines and is a cheap looking font.

I guess it would be Garamond for me. though a few others stated are nice and elegant too.

I never use Times New Roman by choice but there are times when clients (who don't know any other serif font) demand it. Clients get what they want.

vcaster

well, at least they demand it. all the people here always tought that there's only four font existed. Times new roman and arial - plus the script one (tey don't care what it is named) and the one you drew yourself (A.K.A. decorative)

There is only one client I've actually chosen to use Times New Roman for. Believe it or not, the font just happens to work well for their look. Don't worry, it's not in their logo or anything.

yeah, you're right. let's not treat times new roman like some kind of disease to avoid. it's not the font's fault that it become the common and default type.
I'm sure stanley morisson created them perfectly. :)

Oh trust me, Times New Roman is a disease. It's just not as virulent as Comic Sans. ;)

But virgo, you've got to admit that at some point, the letter form is quite OK. It's not that bad right? it's very legible also

It's just too widely used...

Hahaha, but i'm 100% agree on the comic sans issue

I have to agree.
just look at it closely
and you will see.
Times New Roman
is not a font for me.

(sorry had to set it up that way after I realized what I was typing sounded lyrical...to a point.)

Virgo Nightingale

No, it's not THAT bad and it is nicely legible, but you're right: it's too common, and most of the time it looks like someone just left the default font and thought it was good enough. It's not pretty enough to be used as often as it is. In the context of my client's pieces, it took on a different personality and worked well. Every font has its uses, even (dare I say it) CS. You'll just never EVER catch me using it. Not even where it works. :p

yeah, some of them are even don't realize that what type are they using.
i have to say we share the same feeling torward comic sans (sory, whoever designed it - ..... yeah, who is the designer anyway. any clue?)

and by the way, have you ever wonder...
will we ever be this cyncal to garamond or baskervile if they were the so default font?

Times New Roman just isn't as nice of a font as its older brother (sister?) Times Roman, at least in my opinion. Times New Roman has some deficiencies in the way the thins are drawn compared to Times Roman. It's just a weaker, almost Xeroxed copy version of Times Roman.
