I want to learn how to use photoshop, illustrator and like programs to do basic brochures. I was just hired by a company to do some marketing and I'd like to learn some basic fundamentals.... Does anyone recommend any sites with step by step tutorials? Thanks in advance!

negatory. I doubt very much you'd learn from completed material rather than tutorials.

I doubt they want to learn from the templates.
Seems like someone put the cart before the horse. :p

How do people get hired into marketing design, or layout, without
being able to do either, or knowing the software? Where should I send
my resume? I at least have some of those bases covered.

I think the OP was hired as a marketing person rather than a designer and just wants to get their head around what their designer might do? I hope that's what it is. Or do people hire non-designers these days to do real design work and expect them to quickly hash together a design education and enough experience to be workable?
I think it would be easier, cheaper and less stressful for marketing people to do marketing and to leave the designing to designers. If you just want to find out the basics of what your designer can do (to better write briefs and campaigns), book in an afternoon with them to discuss.

budafist, you are charitable indeed. I'm thinking your Question 2 is spot on.

people like me smile from time to time.

Photoshop and Illustrator will help you create layouts to brochures. but PLEASE use QuarkXPress or InDesign to do the actual layouts in... Please.

I guess I like to put on my rose coloured glasses from time to time. It doesn't hurt. Don't worry, I put on my real glasses on from time to time too!

I understand. Layers layers laYers, Heavy, messy, oh it's a mess in illustrator. I don't understand why they won't want to learn the appropriate software for appropriate use if they say they are a graphic designer.:(

You can actually do a 2 sided brochure in Illustrator.
If you are submitting to the printer via pdf as 2 separate files.
We do 2-sided postcards all the time in Illy.
Just don't put 2 pages in one Illy doc.

Basically it all depends on the situation.
Sometimes Illustrator is just perfect for certain job, and InDesign or Quark for others, but the bad part is some designer's they do all things in just Illustrator, when Quark or InDesign should be in use.(page layouts)
Ive always found www.pixel2life.com (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/www.pixel2life.com) to be pretty good.
