Rogers kind of creeped me out... even as a kid. As an adult, I grew to understand his approach-- it just didn't work for me. Too much 'Soma' in his voice.
Now, on the northern fornt, Mr. Dressup (Ernie Coombs), that guy had it.
Likewise Bob Homme (aka 'The Friendly Giant').
They don't make 'em like that anymore. And there seems to be a real 'push' to replace adult kid-show hosts with teens as if their 'cool' element trumps anything a very talented adult host could offer.
Anyone who's seen a real 'master' like Coombs, or say Robert Munsch, or Raffi, do their stuff will know what a false presumption that can be.
Hey, I'm married to a storytime 'performer' -- I should know. (My wife is 'Miss Nancy' at the local public library and her local reputation is at the rockstar level among the four and under crowd -- and their appreciative moms and dads! It takes skill to get there.)

I don't know who any of those people are Broacher, except Mr. Rogers. He was ok, but Captain Kangaroo was THE MAN! :) I mean, c'mon how could you beat Mr. Greenjeans and the dancing bear? To say nothing of mr. bun e. rabbit! I'm quite surprised I remember all that considering....As for the sweater thing, tho, its too hot here.

The Roo was pretty cool. In his inimitable inky-dinky-inky-dinky-inky-dinky-schnitzel-house way.
Hmmm.... I wonder if all those 'inkies' had anything to do with me getting into print design?

One of my prized posessions is an autographed photo of Fred Rogers.
He was a very interesting man. Apparently every bit as kind and concientious as he appeared (a very rare thing indeed). He apperntly had no pettiness or meanspiritedness at all. Plus he was said to be extremely intelligent, but never ever assumed an attitude about it.
We have 2 of his LPs at home. They do a good job of mellowing out our kids.
Somehow we also have a Kukla, Fran and Ollie LP too. we have no idea where that came from.

I grew up in western Minnesota in the 70's. We had 3 TV stations; PBS, CBS and NBC. The CBS station was out of Souix Falls,SD and they had an afterschool show with a local character "Captain Eleven". I just googled and found out the show ran from 1955 until 1996 when Captain Eleven (space traveller aka the news weather guy) retired.

I don't remember that one Broacher.
I remember Mr. Dressup! And Captain Kangaroo as well. A little later on was New Zoo Review. I also remember Hilarious House of Frightenstein. I see they have them available on netflix now, I need to rent and rewatch those. Vincent Price was on that show if I am remembering correctly. Does anyone remember that show? It took me years of trying to remember what it was called so I could track it down. I liked the cooking witch.

The Grammar Slammer! Dr. Pet Vet... Igor. Mr. Sloth? [Can I keep him, please?]
THHOF was a low-budget, cheesy joked after school laugh, and a big hit back in the late sixties. Billy Van (a Toronto area actor) did all the main parts. Igor was played by a character actor who went by the name 'Guy Big'.
And the psychy-dance videos. What a scream! I remember being asked to join a 'gifted' grade 6 class back then (see what those IQ tests can lead to?) and then quickly dropping it -- I was missing all the HHOF shows! Okay, I was also the only boy in the class of thirty nerdy girls... that had a lot to do with it too.
Who remembers the original Batman show with Adam West and Burt Ward? Incredible level of supreme mid-sixties campiness.

Did it also include some sort of blonde superman-type character sketch?

Also remember New Zoo Review, for some reason I did not like that show at all -the frog and Hippo made me uneasy.

From whayt I understand, Romper Room was licensed in each region, so there'd be a different production for each station that was licensed to do the show (instead of syndicating the same show accross the nation).

I actually went to grammar school with the daughter of the Executive Producer of Schoolhouse Rock (that family lived just down a neighboring street).
So my school was well supplied with all of the 35mm films, etc.
We even got a concert (my first rock concert) with actual performers of the songs --this was like 1973 or so, so we were being exposed to some real hippy-type freaks.
I remember the guy singing "Little 12 toes"--kind of my first exposure to "space rock".
