Ok guys i've had long hair (to my shoulders) now for about 2 years or so but i'm going to be looking for a new job soon i think and have been told my my parents and other people that i need a hair cut. now i agree it's a little long now but i'm not sure what i want to do with it.

ugh as i'm typing this im going back and forth about what i should do. i can't even put it down without changing my mind. so i guess i just wanted to see what you guys as professionals think about hair. would some one having long hair make you think "hey this guy is a dirty hippy" or would it not really matter?

if this doesn't make sense i apploagize it's monday and i'm not thiking straight :D

Pull it back into a pony tail and buy a black suit and a Cadillac. You'll look sharp at the interviews and a little scary. Get a haircut, it'll grow back. :D

I've had long hair all my life. I know its different for a girl, but it's hard for me to tell anyone to cut their hair.

I guess it's going to depend on if you apply to a place that's laid back or has a really corporate professional atmosphere.

Sorry, I'm not much help ;)

I'm going through the same thing (sort of). I've always had a chin length shorter hair cut with long bangs, but I've grown my hair out for the first time in 15 years and its past my shoulders. I keep going back and forth, cut it or keep it long.

My advice, and this is what I am doing: if you do decide to cut it short, search around online for some cuts you like, and bring pictures in so you have concrete examples. If you go in to someone and say cut it short you are apt to get a standard cut that person likes to give, and you may or may not be happy with it. So be specific. I'll bet you can find a good inbetween cut that will make you happy, and then if you land the job, grow it back if you miss it. Be sure to post before and after pics if you cut it! :)

My husband went from having dreadlocks from age 18 to 28 and shaved them all off. He said that the difference in first impressions and how joe public reacted to him was astounding. I miss his dreads (he's still a hippie at heart though), but I'd have to advocate a hair cut if you want that extra bit of employability. At least you can cut your hair and it will grow back. Some things that bias employers unfairly cannot be changed temporarily.

For a big change like this, don't go to the quickie haircut places. Pay some extra money and go to a good salon. They'll be able to help you with your choice.

There are also some websites out there you can upload your photo and try on different styles.

ok thanks for the replies guys =] i guess i just wanted to get it out there and hear it from different people. i think i might break out the clippers (if i can find them) tonight and get to work. i know that it needs to be done but i've just had all this hair for some time now and it'll be a big leap but like everyone has said it'll grow back :)

if im do it i'm gonna go from one extreme to the other rather then getting a hair cut though. i think i'm gonna pull it back into a pony tail and just lop it off :D hehe. i'll be sure to take a before and after pic for you guys. it's going to be funny when me beard is longer than my hair =]

There's some salon places that have imaging which takes a photo of you and puts the new haircut so that you can see how "you" will look and not rely on a generic photo.

I love long hair on a guy. Rawwr!

I think long hair can work if it is well taken care of and not straggly or wild. But I can also agree with the consensus of cutting it short for general public impression. There are some cool hair cuts rather then the standard corporate that may work as an edgy compromise.

Also check into locks of love if your hair qualifies, it may give someone with cancer a new look. :)

This is not the most professional look either. I don't always follow this advice myself (I frequently shave my head and have a beard)- but I think you'll also want to avoid the Shell Silverstien look for interviews. I never got rave reviews when I rocked this type of hair style. The general concesus feedback I got (especially from my wife) was to keep the same length stubble on my face as on my head, but not any longer. Good luck with the cut. I think that after having long hair, if you're a low (or no) maintinence type guy like me, you're going to appreciate how easy it is to have a shaved head. You'll shave (no pun intended) minutes off of your morning routine. That's also why after having tried both, I recommend just a short clipper setting rather than a razor for shaving your head, since actually shaving can turn into as much or more daily maintinence than washing and combing. Also if you shave your head clean, apparently the general population takes this as an invitation to rub your head without asking- which can get old fast.

Edit: Here's a visual of good old Shell, in case you weren't familiar. I still like this look, but everyone else didn't seem to share my opinion. Maybe not the way to go into an interview.

haha yea that does look a little on the creepy side. i wasn't planning on shaving it bald but bringing it down to a 1 or 2 and then when it grows back in a bit go to a barber and get the sides closer and let the top go a little bit.

now i'm more worried about my beard then my hair haha. i guess i'll just have to see how it looks. maybe carve some lightning bolts on the sides =]

Go to a salon and ask them for advice. They don't tell us how to do our job. Oh wait...nevermind.

I wonder of hair stylists ever wish people would just sit in their chair and tell them to let their expertise do the leading?

In high school I had really, really long hair (about bum level) and then me and my friend went and got our long hair cut really short. I didn't really know what I wanted except that I wanted a huge change so she did kinda did a long in front and short in back thing. Reverse mullet! My friend has super curly hair and the hair dresser almost shaved it off. Think Jada Pinkett. We actually looked really good.

I think hairdressers quite enjoy creative license like that. I guess it's less stressful than people coming in with a picture of a fabulous looking celebrity and expect to look as fabulous.

I think hairdressers quite enjoy creative license like that. I guess it's less stressful than people coming in with a picture of a fabulous looking celebrity and expect to look as fabulous.I really freaked out a hairdresser once. Through most of high school, I had long hair that reached about halfway down my back. Three days before high school graduation, I went to get it cut.

I told the hairdresser, "I want it cut short."

She looked at me, and then motioned with her scissors a little above shoulder level, "You mean short, like about here?"

"No. I mean short." I indicated with my hands that I wanted it trimmed all the way up to my head.

"Are you sure?" she asked. She seemed nervous about it.

"Yep."

"Are you really sure?" She was probably terrified of cutting off too much and having me yell at her at this point.

"Yes, I am."

"O-o-o-kay..."

SNIP.

It also really shocked everyone in my graduating class when I showed up to graduation rehearsal with short hair. I saw a lot of people do double-takes that day.

Interesting. Our hairdressers were really excited about it. I guess maybe if you've been bitten once (by a client that starts crying) then you might be a bit apprehensive the next time someone wants their lovely hair hacked off.

Virgo Nightingale
03-24-2008, 08:46 PM
Wasn't the Brit at a salon when she picked up the buzzer and shaved her own head? I think she asked the hairdresser to shave it, but he/she probably refused for fear of ending up getting sued over it somehow or just being known as "the hairdresser that shaved Britney's head".

frankster

I usually ask for 4 or 5 inches off when I get my hair cut and they are always reluctant and hold up two or three inches saying "this much?" and I say "bit more please". "this much?" "No, bit more please". "This much?" "Yeah, that'll do". Do they just want to cut off less so you'll have to go back sooner?

Virgo Nightingale
03-24-2008, 09:00 PM
I think it's more of a "maybe they don't really mean 4-5 inches and if I cut too much off I can't uncut it and I might have an angry customer on my hands."

But the "they'll have to come back sooner" thing is entirely plausible too.

budafist
03-24-2008, 09:52 PM
I think it's because they are unsure if you really mean 4-5 inches. They can keep cutting until you are happy with it but if you burst into tears because 4-5 inches is too much, it's kinda too late.

03-24-2008, 09:53 PM

Well I had my first hair cut 4 years ago .. after never having it cut in well over 20 years. I always did the trimming on my own hair .. but I wanted a substantial amount cut off because it was looking pretty scraggly. Soo I went in and told them cut off to just below my shoulders .. it was below my bootay. The woman had a deer in the headlights look to her and the salon went silent. She kept asking me if I was sure - People actually gathered around to watch her cut 14 inches off my hair :D

It's nearly back to my butt again. ;)

I'd like to make a suggestion... I wouldn't keep the facial hair.

I've personally tried to keep my facial hair (which feels like a wire brush), it does itch like a mofo, and my wife doesn't like it much.

Think about it, clean cut and a clean shave. You would look much more professional (you tend to carry yourself that way too) if you did..

Just my opinion.

By the way, my hair cuts? #1 (hair cutter guide) on the sides, then finger width on top, then I put a small amount of gel then semi-spike (not sticking straight up, but more at random 45 degree angles). I'd suggest also go to a salon, not only can you get a really good hair cut, but ask for a washing after the cut. WOW! nothing like a getting your scalp washed by a hair stylist hotty (chick) while your wife/significant other is waiting for you. :p

Besides your scalp/head feels refreshed if you do.

I won't go to those in/out hair cut places (great clips, etc..), I'll spend the $15-20.00 for a really decent hair cut.
