Hello,
I am working with a photoshop file and i need to add a logo into it. the format i have for the logo is an illustrator file. when i place the .ai file into photoshop and print to my laser printer, it comes out all fuzzy. how do i place in my file so that the resolution is preserved?

Thank you, thank you ~

Resolution of a placed VECTOR ai object is preserved. Within the context of the Smart Layer (if that's what you're using). That means you can scale that layer without losing anything BUT-- upon print output, it all gets converted to pixels.

It's better to go the other way: place your PSD into AI.

Thanks Broacher. Grrrrrrr, unfortunate that it does not work, but good to know I am not crazy....:D

are you opening your illustrator file in photoshop and copying it into the art work?
if so double check your art work's resolution (dpi) and match that or in fact increase it when opening the illustrator doc, add it to your art work and then resize.

I hesitate to mention it, but it 'can' work if you save to a PDF file from PShop. Though.... there's a lot of potholes you need to be aware of.

its all about the resolution of the PSD file itself, so if its say, A4 @ 300dpi your logo should look fine.

I'm having a similar problem. I'm using CS2 and when I place AI artwork as a smart object the edges of the ai objects are jagged. I would place the psd in ai but I'm creating a CD cover as a tri-tone and need PS to create some of the effects I'm going for. The image resolution is 300dpi.

Make sure that when you place the smart object, anti-alias is checked.

Make sure that when you place the smart object, anti-alias is checked.
I did that when I placed it originally. I tried again to place and made sure that anti-alias was checked. It still shows the same. I think I'll try the various other methods (copy+paste, etc) to see if anything makes a difference.

CS3 was giving me problems of late and I haven't had the 3years it tkes to install the suite to see if this is just a CS2 issue.

If your logo is in .ai format, it means you can scale your logo as big as you want.
The best way to do this will be scale your logo in Illustrator pretty big, not too big so the file won't get to heavy. Then export it as a .psd format and place it into your photoshop.

Is your printer postscript?? that will have an effect. I compared printing to my epson 2200 with out a postscript rip and with a rip and on vector graphics it came out a bit fuzzy. Also try printing from indesign and make sure ylou have no transparancies. I do not like printing from photoshop for complicated work. I do not feel that it is adequate for anything with text and maybe vector graphics.

Smart objects still get treated on-screen and on-output as rasters. To even get the possibility of preserving vector edges from AI to Pshop it has to be placed as a path or shape layers: which means you're restricted to single-solid colour logos/shapes unless you're prepared to do a lot of multi-layer vector surgery.
