Have you tried the "Reduce file size" feature under the Documents menu?

^^ if that won't reduce it enough you will have to change your export settings. What is the current PDF size you are trying to email?

Thanks for the help. In the past, I have run reduce file size and it has sometimes led to increasing the size! I just tested it again and I got it from 7mb to 481kb. Maybe it is all dependant on what is in the doc.

There's a program for Mac called PDF shrink (http://www.apagoinc.com/prod_home.php?prod_id=30) that might work for you. I've used it for years and it seems to work well. Try the demo on their site and see if it helps any.

It does depend on the document.
I usually make pdf proofs for email just by exporting out of Quark. If there's a duotone image in the layout however, the file size can be huge and reducing file size simply won't reduce enough. That's when I print to a postscript file and distill using the "standard" setting. The resulting file is usually small enough, but I tend to want to reduce them even more. But if I reduce a pdf that was distilled from a postscript file to a "standard" pdf, the file size increases.
Yeah, I just export email proofs out of InDesign, Illustrator, or PS. I just save a preset called 'email proof'. Go to compressions and drop the resolution of raster images top whatever you like (like anything >150 to 100, or >250 to 200). That makes it smaller. Or you can do the built in preset "smallest file size". That makes it way smaller.

Content is important for PDF size. Good example is Autocad drawings. Autocad creates PDF vector files which are way more detailed than most people need. If it's one colour, you can often just rasterize the PDF page in Pshop (no anti-alias, high rez, save as bitmap TIFF) and save a huge amount.
What's in these PDFs you're trying to slim down?
