Greetings oh wise and experienced ones (or even to the thrill seekers out there).

I'm hoping you would share your words of wisdom, motivation and/or caution if you have made the 'jump' yourself at some stage of your career.

I've been working as a full-time graphic designer for a large corporate company for just over three years now, and have also been doing design work for smaller clients in whatever time I have left during the evenings and weekends. Been in design for a while now.

As most of you may know, having a full-time job and doing work on the side is a hard act to balance all the time. What can I say? Madness or maybe its because I love what I do. It's now time for me to leave the nest and expand my palette.

I've decided to quit my full-time job and develop my business further and to do my own thing with more focus. Also, although I currently work on private jobs and various brands, I've just had enough of 'being owned' by a large corporate. Well, that's how I feel at this stage.

It is likely that I will collaborate with another designer, but essentially I am going to have to get out there and further develop my client base. As some of you may be aware, New Zealand is a very small and competitive market, but I am confident and don't have any issues about getting out there and growing my own patch.

I'm planning on making the move in the next three months. Just need to settle a few travel bills and top up the savings account.

Anyone willing to share useful tips that could help me with my (and maybe others') preparation? I know nothing is easy in life, but any suggestions would be useful.

Would appreciate feedback from designers out in the field who have done this themselves. I've read many articles in design magazines, but not always sure about validity of these articles?

Thanks heaps and bring it on I say!
