I am contemplating learning some GIS software (GIS - geographic information systems). Maybe take a few courses.
Has anyone had any experience with this or map creation or cartography?
This is still very new to me so I'm trying to read and get as much information on the subject that I can.

No real GIS experience here, although I'd like to dig into it. I know quite a bit about satellite imagery, however-

Have you ever used ARC - type software?
I am interested in this field but I am unsure if my graphic design skills/experience would be useful or wasted.

I have not, I work with a woman in-house who does all of our imagery processing. I believe she uses Leica Imagine for that. Rumor is that she is leaving the company, so maybe I can get that installed and start working in it.
Like I said, I'd like to learn more myself about it. It could add value to what I already do here (I'm in the satellite/aerial imagery biz).
I would say if you're interested in it, then see what you can do with it. GIS stuff is rapidly growing here in Colorado, with more and more applications everyday. I have found that I'm more interested in Geography than I ever imagined as a result of my job.

You're right. There are many different avenues for GIS. Business, government, environmental...
I'll have to look into some courses.
