Soooo....
If I have my design for my website all ready to go, no flash or special stuff going on, just images, do I have to have a program like Dreamweaver or Frontpage to make all the buttons etc. work, or can I do it all in Photoshop/Illustrator by slicing? Anyone, anyone?

you don't need a special program to code a website... you can even write code in notepad if you're so inclined, though a program like dreamweaver might make it a little easier to look at because it highlights your tags in a different color so you can follow the markup more easily.
Check out this thread (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33457) which has a link to an open source program like dreamweaver.
If you're interested in learning more about coding, I would recommend www.w3schools.com

NVU is now defunct.
It has been replaced by KOMPOZER (http://www.kompozer.net/)
It has its quirks but is stable.
There are loads of link to opensource web design programs here (http://www.designvitality.com/blog/2007/10/25-open-source-web-design-programs-and-tools-you-should-already-know-about/)
