So which is it, Stationary vs. Stationery? I've seen it used both ways all over the place...

Stationery. I just remember "e" as in envelope.

stationery: letterhead, etc.

stationary: not moving (like a stationary bike)

i got tripped up by capital/capitol last week.

Capital: Capital letter, or city that is a seat of government
Capitol: The building in which the legislature sits

my mum is/was an english teacher and so i'm always pissing people off at work correcting their spelling and grammar... it doesn't make me any friends :(

Mine was too, Cap'n and I do the same thing. So that's why I have no friends. I always thought it was becuz I'm so much better than everyone else. J/K!

The way I remember:
Stationery = Envelope
Stationary = Car

I remember it as you use stationery to write a letter, but when you stay, you're stationary.
