I've searched the forum for an answer to this but couldn't find anything (though I must say I gave up on page 8 of the Sticky jpeg, gif ,png debate!)

I'm trying to build my first portfolio site. I see many people are recommending saving forweb at no less than 80 for the Jpeg quality. The loading time that photoshop estimates for files I am saving like this is still over 10secs. Can anyone give me a quick rule of thumb as to what file size I should be aiming for for? under 40k? or is up to 100k fine?

Size does not matter, time does.
You have hinted on the solution yourself.
Use reasonable sized thumbnail copies and have them open a window with a larger graphic. If the potential client is interested enough in the thumbnail he will wait even 10 seconds.

Thank you, so should my thumbnails be at 80 for quality too? I'm using lightbox2 so I think it preloads images while you are viewing. Is there any way of testingloading timeon my computer or do I have to access my site from someone elses (I ask because I'm not live yet!)

80 jpeg quality is fine for thumbnail, however I would prefer .png for the actual portfolio graphic.
