Got a weird questions: When i align an object in illy at 0,0 it is showing up on the bottom left hand corner of the artboard. the middle reference point is selected. any idea why my ruler is starting measuring from bottom up??

To change the origin or where 0,0 is:
Turn on your ruler (if it's not already on)
Put your mouse in the white square that is the top left corner of the ruler. Hold down and drag the cursor into your artboard to where you want 0,0 to be.
Hope that makes sense!
You might have done this accidentally before and set your origin to a new place.
Adobe has always done that. Beats the hell out of me why since I don't know anybody who really measures stuff that way. Do what Buda said. :)

I think it has to do with the early days of Adobe Illustrator and its connection with the Postscript language. Postscript page description language starts from the bottom left as well. It's the same reason that to move something up in Illustrator using the move dialog, you type a positive value and down is a negative value.
is it not the standard way in mathematic to have the origin bottom left? All CAD packages use this method.

It is the standard for programs like CAD
Positive numbers are always in the upper right quad.
