Illy seamless pattern

Got a question. Illy is acting strange. I made a seamless pattern...just a pattern of stars. Everything works fine. However today i decided to add a drop shadow to the stars...some of the shadow falls outside of the size of the art board. I have tried making a clipping mask, rasterizing and makinga clipping mask...and no matter what...it will remove the shadow from my sight but when i drag it into my swatches palette it is no longer seamless. what step am i missing?!?!

this is just a guess, caleb, but could it be because the drop shadow is a raster effect? Could you post a screen shot please?

sounds like the shadow is outside the box ?

i think the drop shadow is raster. it was applied by
Effects-->Stylize-->DropShadow

And yes, the shadow when applied falls outside the box. However if i try to trim it with a clipping mask it still is not seamless. Cropping it doesnt remove the shadow at all. Any suggestions?
