I'm 16 and going to college to do a to year course in Graphic Design next year. Then hopefully moving onto a degree one day!
I thought I'd introduce myself with a piece of work I just finished. It started off as something I did to keep myself occupied one day when I was bored.
My technical skills aren't brilliant, so I probably could have pulled this off better with more experience.
Also, it says "Jepix" it has been pointed out on several occassions that it looks a bit too much like "Sepix"...
Comments and criticism please. I want to improve :D

First and foremost a good logo should work in straight black and white and at small sizes. I don't see that being the case with this at all as if you reduce it to fit on a business card all those small dots are probably just going to fill right in and look like one big mess.

I see what you mean :)
I don't have any experience in making graphics for print or anything, I purely designed it for a website or portfolio or something.
Keep the criticism coming :)
Here is a response that Morea posted to another member. It is very applicable to yours as well. :)

That was actually really helpful.
Thank you :D

I like this a lot. I would have moved the design text to the left a little and not done the effect at the bottom. great start
Very good for your first logo design. The color scheme is very interesting. As 2 above posters stated, the purple expanding dots could be removed and make the design stand out more and although you dont design for print now, it is a necessity in the field, and it wont work well small- the dots will create a big block of cluster. But really excellent!

I like the design. As mentioned, let's see the work in solid black & white first though.

Glad some of you like it.
I've taken all of your advice and here are the results:

I need to make some adjustments to make it black with a white background.
I will post later.
What do you guys think now?

It's interesting, but it only reads as "Sepix design" to me. The version without the purple dots is an improvement. Now I would suggest playing around with the placement of the J dots so it reads as a J.

looks so much better without the x dots. i also agree somewhat about it saying sepix. maybe some different color schemes too?

Please don't design in RGB. ;)
also, those dots are WAY to small and will fill in when printed smaller. They BARELY work right now as it is...
spot on Dan, i think youre done.

Ok, I've tried with bigger circles. I'd never want this printed anyway, but would this work better when printed?

i like it but lets not call it a logo for the reasons stated above.
to make this look more like a J try & put the effect on a different letter, maybe off the I going the other direction.

I agree with the comments made so far. With that said, it is about 10 times better than anything I could have made when I was 16

Thanks, well I'm doing a two year course in Graphic Design at college starting next year. And I want to keep practicing in my free time.
And with all of your advice and criticisms surely I can only get better? (I hope!)

I like how you made this image. Technical skill is something that I need to work at myself. I generate more ideas than I know what to do with and in the end make none. But that is off topic! On topic time!
Since most people, including yourself, comment on the "Sepix" as what they really read. Try sending the circles (bubbles?) in a straight up direction. The eye is following the curve and drawing in the S instead of seeing them as seperate from the words. Or do like vtwin gary said and put it off a different letter. Although I honestly like the feel of the first letter having the effect.

I also think this works as a nice stand alone graphic. But not as a logo.

I'm going to try and make it going straight up later.
Riefnu, I'm the same as you, I come up with loads of ideas but then have no idea how to make them!

I've recreated the image in CMYK as opposed to RGB, it's the first time I've done this.
I'm having difficulty putting onto an InDesign document, because I can't get the blacks to match. I'm using C = 0, M = 0, Y = 0 and K = 100 for both but they look a lot different. Could someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I know you said you never meant for it to be for print but here's a little rule I learned in design school: When designing a logo, ALWAYS design it with the assumption that it may be printed someday. Design it in black and white only (NOT gray scale) - color should be the last thing on your mind and effects for the web (like gradients, shadows, etc) could always be added later after you know it works well in black and white. The other thing you want to think about is whether or not any detail is lost when scaled down to about an inch.

Well I've started to actually design a "logo" now.
Thoughts on this?
