I'm having bad times using the undo command in photoshop, since it reminds the layer i was working on, so most of the times that i switch layers and execute the undo command i return to the layer i was working before, and it ends up making a mess, so i was wondering if there's somthing that can be done to change the undo command.
Earlier versions of photoshop didn't have this problem, i think that CS started it all.

I think it's always been this way, falls back to the last edited layer. All I can suggest is to name your layers accurately... and be aware of what you're doing when the undoing does done doing it's duty do. ha huh... alliteration is fun! im simple, i know.

I agree and think this is ridiculous. Whenever I work, I have to think ahead and do something minor to the layer I want to work on so when I undo it stays on the layer and then delete the minor dot or whatever I did before.
Why the hell selecting a layer doesn't go in the history I have no idea. And how Adobe have missed this flaw for so long is even crazier.
It will never do you a favour. If I choose a layer, draw on it and then undo - it will never be the previous layer I will want next. It doesn't help anybody and is just unneccesary confusion.

What are you guys talking about?
Using CS on a mac here at home and any step in History I choose goes back to the layer that corresponds to that history step. If you want to remove a step in the history, delete it using the trashcan.

^ I was wondering too. I haven't experienced a problem with this.

PrintDriver i'm currently using the CS3 version, although i wrote that i thought it started with CS, well i guess i was wrong, anyway CS3 has it and it's a new feature that i don't really understand since it makes more trouble than it solves.
I'm using a PC by the way, i don't think that it's the source of the problem but it's worth clarifying it.

I could be mistaken but I believe he's asking if there is way to undo and make PS stay on the layer which he manually selected prior to falling back/undoing.

That's exactly what i am asking romancing_layouts, excuse me if i wasn't clear.

Use Command-Option-Z instead of Command-Z (that's the Mac Keyboard command for Step Back, not sure of the PC equivalent).

I'm afraid that Ctrl + Alt + Z (in PC) makes the same results. Ctrl + Z undoes one step, if you add "Alt" you can undo multiple steps but PS still remembers and changes the layer i'm working on (of course in the case that i make something in a layer, then change to another and do something else and then try the undo command).

Weird, that isn't the result I had, but I tried it with CS2.

I'll check out CS3 in the morning at work. I gotta say though, I've been using PSCS3 at work for many months now without noticing this 'problem'.

It's strange that just "romancing_layouts" and i have this "problem" (it's more like an annoying feature).
I don't think that it is the PSCS3 version, but it is a possibility... Hopefully tomorrow PrintDriver will clarify this.

nah you are not the only ones, i know that problem too.. it already happened to me so often even if i try not to forget to look out. so annoying when that happens.

Ok, I'm still not getting this, I guess.
In PSCS3, my undo (step backwards) goes backwards in the order of the steps in my history. It doesn't stay on the layer I have selected.
Are you trying to stay on your layer and selectively go backwards on just that one layer?

Let me explain it in another way.
I want to go back in my history without PS selecting the layers i was working on.
For example if i had 2 layers (layer1 and layer2) both with some strokes, there's no history yet i have just opened the program.
Now i make one stroke in layer1, and then one stroke in layer2.
Now i realize that the one i draw in layer2 looks terrible, i hit the undo command (Ctrl + Alt + Z) PS not only undoes the stroke in layer2 but it takes me to layer1 (this is what i find annoying, now if i wasn't paying attention to my layers i would be painting above the stroke in layer1).
Hope i was clear enough

It's just bringing you back to the layer with the action you wanted undone. PS assumes that you went that far back in the history because you want to change something in that same layer so it takes you back to it. Makes sense to me. Plus you should be paying attention to what layer you're on anyways. ;)

Yes, it makes sense, but it's not what i am used to, please correct me if i am wrong but earlier versions didn't have this behaviour, did they?

I believe previous versions did this too, but I can't check. The oldest version of PS I have is CS2.

i believe it's worked that way ever since they added "undo history"

Then sorry for the misunderstanding, i must have confused it with something else.
I've been using corel painter lately and it does exactly what i am trying to fix with PS and i don't know why i strongly remember earlier versions of PS doing the same.

I must be missing something, because that's not what happens to me.
