The counter records air pulses and the time between each time an axle hits the tube. The software converts the data into three basic categories. Vehicle Class, Speed, and Volume. Then it breaks the output data to a set of spread sheets that shows the data at time intervals. At this point we can determine what type, how fast and when peak traffic is on a given day.

Speed?!? Those things capture speed?!?
Uh, I mean, wow, tha'ts really cool!
We have a huge Interstate construction project here (since January), and all the nearby surface streets have them laid down. Unfortunately I haven't seen much of an improvement in the traffic light timing. Is that what the gathered data would be used for?

They do capture speed but not all the time specific set ups collect speed others just volume.
I gather data New York State Dot. They have established touring route that we count on a regualr basis to aquire funding from The Fed for repairs. They could be studying your roads for just about anything. Sounds like they may be studying for what impact detours would have.

yep from what I have been told it determines if and when road repairs need to be done from how much wear and tear they are getting. How congested areas are. Do they need a red light/stop sign, more cop patrols .. all sorts of stuff ;)

If they ever tell you that you were speeding, just tell them that you weren't... you were just driving a really short car.

heh, I can just imagine taking out the passenger air bag and making a custom fold out unit.
We constantly have our laptops in the car and have nothing as nifty as that set up.

Pain was the mother of invention. I started getting a kink in my neck from putting my notebook on the center piece of ply wood and having to navigate with my head turned constantly. Then I just went way overboard with upholstery and cushions more like a joke for my driver but it turned out pretty good.

I was actually thinking of doing that after check out on of the online book makers in a thread last night. I had never seen a site like that before. Our owner boss nicknamed us regional crew chiefs "Johny Roadtube". Title would be"The Photographic Adventures of Johnny Roadtub" and I would give our owners one as a gift at Xmas. He is very generous with us during the holidays.

just be thankful you don't live in this hell hole of a state, we don't have traffic cops anymore, just nifty little cameras that take your picture and send you a bill in the mail for speeding. our city has made over 2 BILLION dollars in the 2 years it has been running here..... guess where the majority of that money is goin???? not back into the community thats for sure

They've just begun installing red light cameras here... and people are wailing and gnashing of teeth about them. Running yellow lights is a sport in this town.

see now the red light camera's im fine with cuz people are effin idiots when it comes to that and i recently lost a friend cuz some ******* ran a red light and killed her so im all for that. but we live in the desert and the city is on a grid, that meand no curves, no hills, just flat land and lots of good weather....so you would think with driving conditions being optimal you could follow the state law of what is considered "Reasonable and Prudent" but considering a machine can't tell a judge what is "Reasonable and Prudent" they have a pretty big loophole in there system. but, people continue to just send in there checks without going to court, im on camera ticket #4 and haven't paid a single one yet

We used to have that as well. Then a new government came in and axed the program. Best thing they ever did.

They tried this out in a few spots in Minneapolis. If I remember right, last year it went to the State Supreme Court and they ruled that it was not legal as they were ticketing the vehicle and not the driver. It's the driver that should receive the penalty and they couldn't prove the owner was driving the vehicle from a photo of the license plate. They had to return fines to the people that paid them.
