Hello everybody,
In my company we have Indesign CS2 and my boss asked me if it woths to upgrade to CS3. Since I jumped from Quark 4.0 to Indesign cs2 and don't have CS3 in my mac to test it, could you please help me?
Is it worth it to upgrade from cs2 to cs3 and why? what are the benefits/new stuff in CS3?
Thank you all in advance
st.
The biggest difference is that CS3 runs natively on intel macs. So if you have intel macs, CS3 means a huge speed boost.
Also, you can check out the features on the Adobe site to see if there is anything there that looks like it could improve your workflow.

You can download a fully functioning demo, it works for 30 days. Just be sure not to save any live documents with the newer version, in case you don't end up upgrading.

If you aren't running an Intel Mac, and you don't have a specific need,
I'd wait to upgrade. At least for what I do, the upgrade doesn't really
provide too many new features.

I'm with DT. If I didn't have to upgrade to keep up with the designers, there really is no need to if you aren't on an Intel mac.
CS4 is probably due out within a year or so anyway. No word yet from Adobe on that.

It's got some nice new features. Click through this list (http://www.communitymx.com/content/article.cfm?page=1&cid=7911C) or this list (http://www.adobe.com/products/indesign/features/).
There are some nice new features. The effects are a somewhat useful add and I've found the being able to place InDesign files within InDesign files pretty useful.
As everyone said, look through the new features, perhaps try the demo and decide for yourself.

I am upgrading and looking forward to the new features in bridge and the multiple place in ID. I'd be content to stay with CS2 but thats not up to me.

We're going to be upgrading beginning of the coming week. Spurred on primarily by one of our major clients and their in-house design crew using CS3 and us needing to be able to open their files.
Anyone know how hard it is to keep CS2 on the same system? I'd like to keep at least Illy and Indy CS2 versions as well as having the upgrade versions.

I like the idea of being able to place multiple files.
But what I would like to see is the ability to be able to dictate the number of decimal places that show up in the tab settings. I work in mm not inches, and the number of decimal places defaults to 4, which usually means the whole numbers are not visible in the tiny little window. I have to use the cursor to move back to the left so i can see the whole number. So annoying.

I know what you mean but I had never been annoyed by it. Until now. Thanks.

urst, according to the Adobe user-to-user forums, it's not a problem at all. I remember several threads in the InDesign for Mac thread last summer when people were upgrading, and very few people had problems.

Sorry to make a point if it, but it really does annoy me. By bringing it up, I was rather hoping someone might have a fix. Apparently not. Does it also happen if you work in inches or picas or points? WHY are there so many decimal places? Surely two would be enough no matter what measurement unit you were using?

keep in mind CS3 indesign cant easily save to CS2, you have to save to inxx first.
make sure everyone who will get your files has it too.
I love being able to choose resolution when exporting jpgs... one of our printers needs those and it was a big hassle before!

Yup, I knew that about the .inx format. I've used it to save from CS2 to CS1.

It's no issue at all on my Mac (10.4.11), though I never find myself
needing CS2 anymore. I only have CS3 loaded on my PC work station. From
experience I know that on Windows Acrobat will over write previous versions,
but I don't think that's the case for the rest of the suite.

I have both CS2 & CS3 loaded. I kept CS2 on for the upgrade cause I'm used to getting "please point to a valid installation of Photoshop" in order to upgrade. I keep everything on a server, so space on my HD was not an issue.
I absolutely love CS3 - the pallet layout is much improved IMO.

Successfully upgraded today, with both versions resident on my computer. Ultimately I'll probably get rid of Photoshop and Illy CS2, but I do like the option of being able to save back one more version in InDesign if needed.
