From the suggestions I got a few weeks ago, I have been updating my portfolio and changing a few things around. This is something I have recently worked on to add as one of my peices. It's a fake adoption poster for an Animal Shelter in South Carolina.
I was going for a very friendly look, and tried my best to portray it with a picture of my dog. I wanted the picture to be the main focus, so it has the most contrast, and this is also why I got rid of the background entirely. All comments welcome, especially on whether or not I need to have a "CAT & DOG" in the logo; instead of just a cat.

such a cute puppy....
I quite like the colour. really gives a warm feeling. Not a big fan of the font tho...to cutesy for my tastes, and it looks similar to a lot of others I've seen for stuff like this. Just seems generic to me.

I agree.. Additionally, the handwritten font feels remote and distant, like a young child being made to write a letter.
Try an oldstyle serif font.

^ Yup. ALso, I would make the type bigger and darker. It needs to stand out more. Imagine just walking by the poster. Would you be able to read it at a glance?
Other than that I like it.

I was pretty concerned about that typeface, so I'm glad you all seem to agree on that change. Personally, my handwriting is pretty bad; it's a mixture of cursive/print that changes day to day. So I'm going to experiment with some more serious fonts and try to get some writing samples from people with legible handwriting.
A little bit busy at the moment, but I'll be sure to post an update sunday.

I've decided on palatino italics as a typeface, and have used a subtle black to match it's color with the dog and the logo. It was one of the more conservative fonts that did not get carried away by decorations.

I really like the colors really really like the colors and the simplicity of the text very good composition. In my opinion i like the previous text it just fit much better with how everything is in the picture very muted colors and very skinny handwriting my 2 cents.

I agree with you that the text seemed to fit better in the first one. But after looking around, I feel that I needed to find something a bit more depressing/serious. Palatino is working fine for now, but I'm still looking for a more serious cursive style font so it will mesh with the background better.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.

you could try to write the text yourself. I don't know what your style of handwriting is, but sometimes thats the best solution.
But the second revision isnt working for me.
i like the color better on the first one (it definitely highlights the dog, which seems appropriate to me), and i don't like either font choice. the first one is too generic, the second one is too formal. what about something *like* chalkdust?
re: the cat in the logo - i do think it's too specific (unless they get loads more cats than dogs)... would it work to have one with a cat (which they use with images that have other animals - like the poster you're showing) and one with dogs, which they use with images with cats or other animals? if not, then i would maybe add a dog or go with something more multipurpose like a pawprint or something.
