Illustrator CS3 not letting me add effects to live text

In Illustrator CS3 I used to be able to add gradients and drop shadows and things like that to live editable text. Somehow recently, I can only change solid fills and can't add shadows or gradients unless I create outlines.

Anyone know why this could be happening?

I have Illustrator CS3 and the appearance palette still allows you to add a gradient fill to editable text, and a drop shadow (as long as you use the "effect" drop shadow" and not the filter.)

You shouldn't be using the filter anyway.
A filter Dropshadow cannot be adjusted for resolution once it is made.
If you are gonna use filter, make sure your raster effects resolution is set properly for output first.

I agree PD. I try to not ever use the filter menu.
