Does anyone have any tips on what resolution works best for newspapers? I have 250 dpi at actual print size. I think that will be okay but.........I am also dealing with a moire in the image that only shows up on screen and when I pdf but not when I print. Of course I will send a pdf to the newspaper so therein lies the problem.

The newspaper should have guidelines in place to tell you what file format, dpi, etc. Have you tried contacting them?

Have you ever seen what happens to a moiré in a line screen?

I have 25 different newspapers to send it to! I was looking for generalities.

Well, generalities might give you an idea, but if you want it to look correct, you'd make sure it matches the guidelines of each paper.

PD usually is good with printing questions, so he may have more info for you if you're looking for generalities.

Caveat: I am not a printer/pre-press expert.

Getting specifications (file format, profiles, dpi, sizes, safeties, etc. from each publication/newspaper/printer is the standard procedure that I follow. Most publications will have their specs posted on their website.

For me and my work, I have found it is better to have the info before I start setting up the ad.

Is the moiré intentional? Moiré is usually something I try to avoid.

I would be concerned as to how it prints in 25 different newspapers, with 25 different presses, different ink densities, different paper stocks, etc.

Hope this helps.

Moire is definitley not intentional. I am trying to get rid of it. I was not given enough time to make 25 different versions. I just do a PDF/X and slam it out there. The last one looked like that is exactly what I did, too. I am just trying to take it up a notch this time....by the end of today

Is the moire in the photo? How was this image (where the moire is) made? In the last version, did you use the same image? Did you make any changes to it? Have you checked links, resolutions, overprinting prefs? Have you rotated the image? (from the last time it printed/pdf when it was not moire)

Can any of the pre-press guys weigh in here?

you can try to gaussian blur and unsharp mask .... or noise > median and then unsharp mask.

Is the moire only showing in the PDF at certain zoom levels? You'll have a tough time knowing whether or not it will print unless you can do some test prints at the actual linescreen that the newspapers print with (some might be 85, others 100, etc.). Also, the moire may not show up at all linescreens.

Can you post up the PDF for us to look at?

Thanks everyone for the input....I had to send the ad today so I guess I will see how it turns out. I did the gaussian and median stuff but to no avail. A very stubborn moire. My photographer seemed to think it might just be a screen moire since it didn't print. We shall see.........
