My husband just bought me a Canon Rebel Xti for graduation. He said a newer one was coming out and I could exchange if I wanted. Is the 40D the newer one? If so, how is it different from the XTi?
Congrats by the way...can't wait to see your photos!

congrats. I have an "old" Nikon D70" but Canon and Nikon are top DSLRs and the lenses are high quality too.
My brother and I also split a D70 and had it converted to Infrared Digital Photography. That is kind cool too.
Snap away and don't forget to buy more memory cards!!

The one you are talking about is the XSI (aka 450D) it's got quite a lot of features and 12mp to boot! Personally I like the feel of the XXD series cams but the XSI is an awesome camera still!
you can do a comparison at dpreview.com...do the side by side to see the difference.

yeah, im stoked. why did it take so long to get?? well mostly money, and credit issues (got my credit score from 350-760 in 2 years) so ive got a couple credit cards to use with no APR for the first year. I got the body for $999.95 at sigma4less.com because they had good reviews and warranty to boot so I chose to buy through them.
gonna go get a lens and memory card etc... sometime next week after i get the cam, then its off to shoot everything i possibly can. will be driving up to Vegas next month and plan on getting alot of use out of it for that trip as well.

If time allows, take nighttime shots (with tripod) of Bellagio fountains.
And/or take a day trip to the GrandCanyon. I should post a pic I took there a few years back. We drove to HOover dam and then at 1pm decided we should make it to teh grand canyon before sunset. just made it and snapped some good pics.
Enjoy!!

Cool bro, that's a great price! I think there are Canon Rebates going on for the US...lemme see if I can dig it up.
I use a 4gb CF card and I get 300 pics in .raw, they're failry affordable these days so I would suggest a 4gb. What lens are you looking to get?
I guess I should have been more specific but I was referring why you had to wait a week to get the 40D :) but I guess you ordered it online and have to wait for shipping.

thx guys! and yeah BJM I plan on stopping at the bellagio most def.
tyger - not sure what lens I will be getting, probably just the normal canon one that is on the floor model at best buy, but good to know about the 4 gig card. will speed be an issue when saving to the card? I know this thing can take like 6 pictures a second so wondering if write speed to the card will be a problem if i go with a not so well known model or brand.

Rangefinder (or Outdoor Photography) just posted info on speeds of cards for DSLR.
Does it take SD or CF?
The Sandisk Ultra 3 outperformed the Kingston 266x (Sandisk 3 is really a 133x card or 166x). Lexar is good as is the Sandisk Ultra or Extreme series.
Remember to buy more cards than you think...or have a harddisk to copy to...RAW takes space and better to shot and review later than to have to decide what to delete while on a trip.
On a bellagio tip, I like shooting from the left side to have the Bellagio in the background and Olives to the right, last time I was on teh right and didn't seem as good but preference is up to you. Also, check out the Bellagio gardens inside for good floral shots and to see the Chihuly Glass sculpture on the ceiling in the lobbby.

good info man, thanks alot. when was the last time you were at the bellagio? cuz i think they change their entire decor like 4 times a year for each season, ill have to stop in the gardens and see what treat they have for me this time. the last time I went it was around christmas and it was just beautiful inside. im glad ill be in Vegas for 4 days, plenty of time to get some poker in and plenty of time to hang with the fam and take pics!

You should be O.K. for the CF card. I'm using a Scandisk Ultra II and the few times I've tried the continuos mode the 6.5fps is frickin' quick but the card didn't bog down at all...mind you It was a period of short bursts. With the 40D there are 2 continuos modes. The one with the "H" is the faster mode.
Seen Here (http://www.photoreview.com.au/reviews/digitalslr/EOS-40D_top.jpg) you can see it on the bottom right, the square with the "H".
I don't remember what gear you had before or what lenses, but I would stay away from bestbuy, future shop for lenses..they are highly marked up. I've bought most my lenses used at 2 particular forums that have "buy and sell" Markets with great success. Are you looking for a wide angle zoom? Prime lens? a good walk around lens? Determine what your needs are and what you will mainly shoot?
I would recommend the nifty-fifty 50mm 1.8, Canon's cheapest lens but for under $100US it's a sharp prime lens. Built cheap and a slightly noisy focus motor but for the price it's a sharp lens. It's something you could experiment with for now :)

Thank you so much, my old cam was a pos Sony F-717 and i had generic screw on lenses = lame. Any chance you can hook me up with some links to those forums? I want a basic lens right now, something simple with a good zoom. I was looking at getting this lens EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 as for my needs, man I want it all :D haha, but for now I just need a simple lens to shoot everything from fashion shoots (urban street stuff) to landscapes, to dim light dirty nasty clubs and bars so a mixture of everything really. I like the lens you posted, for 100 bones thats not bad at all. I might go that route and save myself some dough. oh yeah, one more thing, do you know of any lenses that have a macro as well? without having to go the whole actual macro lens route. my old macro was just a screw on underneath a wide angle. not sure how the pro ones are for canons. i got alot to learn

Depends on what your budget it, but I'll make some suggestions for around $300? The lens I mentioned (50mm 1.8) is a prime lens, meaning a fixed focal length, you just have to learn to zoom with your feet :)
When I got my XT, it came with the 18-55mm and though it is a decent lens to start and learn on and it's also quite affordable, it will leave you wanting more. I would either start of with the 50mm 1.8 or get a decent zoom which I will get into more later.
actually, do you use msn or yahoo messenger? we can chat about it because I'll be taking some z's soon...going up to Niagara for a couple days and won't be online to often this weekend.
PM me your addy if your up for linking up to chat about all this, lots to go through to get you in the right direction. I've bought a few lenses and sold a couple that I regret buying/selling because of lack of knowledge.
