I found this tutorial at Design*Sponge interestin (http://www.designspongeonline.com/2008/05/welcome-julia-and-how-to-make-a-repeat-pattern.html)g. Never thought about it before.

Just thought I might share in case anyone else found it useful.

Thanks D-Frag :)

Which reminds me. When ever my fiance defrags his computer we always joke it's because there are too many fraggles living in it.

...just in case you don't know what a fraggle is...

That's pretty cool, I already knew the process in PS but I never though about anyone doing it freehand that's awesome.

Just thinking, is this the same method of how to make a tessellation? I love tessellations but the concept of trying to create one made my steam come out of my ears and was followed by my head exploding.

You also can do the whole thing in Illy ---> click me (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Illustrator/13.0/help.html?content=WS714a382cdf7d304e7e07d0100196cb c5f-64d2.html). Of you open Illy Help and search for "pattern" there are several pages of instructions for geometric patterns, etc. (this, of course, is for people like me who don't draw well)

I'm working on a pattern right now. I've drawn it but am in the process of colouring it in now. Watch this space...

yeah i know what fraggle rock is, beeeeelieve me I do, i get called that almost on a daily basis here at work (i work with alot of other local DJ's) i also get alot of other "not so nice" things referenced to my name :)

It didn't quite match up as it should, but here is my pattern.

What I have learned: If your scanner is only A4, don't make your artwork A4. It is really important that all 4 edges of the artwork are included in the scan so best to make the artwork about A5+ to ensure all edges are scanned.

Here's my second attempt. This time drawing on an A5 sheet. You can still see the edges of the page. Damn...I think it's because I haven't rotated the page 100% square.

Wow, buda, those are great! The second one is tighter, but I like them both. You're gonna have me sketching yet...it looks like fun!

I think I figured out my problem. My trimming thing isn't square! I shall trim these by hand with a knife and rule instead.

:) Thanks garricks for the encouragement. I'm having fun with these too.

The panda bunny one is very very cute and the clouds on the first one you did remind me of the Nepalese Tankas we have up around the house form my husband's trips. Very cool!

Those are so cool buda. Possibly the cutest patterns ever.

OK Buda, you've peaked my interest enough for me to get off my ass and try this. I've just done some floral drawings a few weeks ago that might lend themselves well to this sort of thing. I'll be back to join in when I've put pen to paper! :)

Lol at happy dancing time! Have you got leg warmers on?

Hang on, I'll get mine to post. It's not nearly so fun. Very dull and sensible by comparison in fact.

frankster

Here we go. The original drawing was 6 by 4 inches and black pen on white paper.

http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/4249/wallpapercolour3kt4.jpg

I've been thinking that this is much easier to do on the computer from scratch with the pen and ink type drawings, rather than cutting and taping the page, but it might be fun to do the manual approach with more interesting media, like stamps, collage, paint, actual objects stuck on, you know, make the most of the off screen thing.

wow, those are both cool. I can see frankster's as curtains, and buda's as a child's wallpaper!

It's funny you should say that Garricks, because the first time I drew flowers like this for another project realised that I had probably been subconciously influenced by the old dust sheets that I dyed blue and hung up as my bedroom curtains a couple of years ago...

Frankster, that pattern is gorgeous. Love the colours.

Thanks Buda. I was thinking I might try and do a repeating pattern for my kids. It would be nice to do shapes/abc/123/animals or something fun but educational. I tried fitting the whole alphabet together onto a repeating pattern, but I'll have to go for a more readable font if it's for the kidlets. I did this one in kind of 80s disco colours to go with your leg warmers for happy dancing time.

OK, so I cheated this time. My cutting and sticking just wasn't as straight as I wanted it to be so I did it all in Indesign & Illy. I'm a cheat. I said it.

Here's a Helvetica Alphabet wallpaper.

I did my alphabet one in illy too. It's not cheating, it's using the tools available to make the job easier ;) Like I said before though, I'd like to try the paper and tape method for some scanned lumpy bumpy sticky, painty and gluey type stuff :)

Ok I gave it a shot ... being lazy I didn't draw anything and I can't cut a straight line to save my life ... soooo... applying the same principals, I did mine in PS ;)
