A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds: "What does love mean?"
The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think...

"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired."
Terri - age 4

"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK."
Danny - age 7

"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen."
Bobby - age 7

"If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate."
Nikka - age 6

"I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones."
Lauren - age 4

"When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you." :)
Karen - age 7

A four year old child had a next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife.
Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there.
When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said,
"Nothing, I just helped him cry."

Wow, broacher, that got me going all over again. What an incdredibly selfless act.

I get to read stuff like that all the time since my wife teaches 2nd grade. Her kids write all sorts of bizzare things. :)

WOW Broacher I've never seen that before. It's nice to see in this day and age when players are beating up umpires and spitting on referees that some people still consider sportsmanship important.

Anyone ever hear of an adman named Chuck Blore? Maybe his most famous campaign was the AT&T "Reach Out and Touch Someone" series on TV but among radio adpeople his name is synonymous with working with kids--and getting hundreds of award-winning ads out of them.

There's a famous radio spot he once did for some community-based church in the seventies where he interviews a very young child (I'm guessing, four or five years old) and it goes (something) like this:

Chuck: Um, what does 'bigotry' mean?

Kid: I don't know... what 'biggery' means.

Chuck: What about 'racism'?

Kid: I don't know.

Chuck: What about 'hatred'?

Kid: I don't know what it means.

Chuck: Do you know what 'prejudice' means?

Kid: Um... I think it's when, somebody's... sick?

[pause]

Chuck: [soft laugh and then] That's beautiful.

Of course, in the spot, it's the kid's completely wide-open and innocent 'voice' that drives it so effectively home (it doesn't do it justice to translate into plain text).

I think it demonstrates the power and elegance of saying a message clearly, and honestly. Also, it demonstrates Chuck's genius at knowing when to 'stay out of the way'. A rare gift and if anyone has ever had to work with young actors, you'd certainly agree.

Apparently, in the world of radio advertising, the mantra for working with young kids is: WWCD. 'What Would Chuck Do'. Pretty high praise, I'd say.
