Designing meters

Hi there!

I am currently writing a utility to measure bandwidth usage, but am having trouble designing a meter that will effectively and compactly display all of the information I want it too. I don't think its a big challenge, but it's beyond my capability.

Does anyone know of any sites/forums etc that I can go to for help?

I am writing free software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software) and so am looking for free (gratis) and open (non-proprietary) resources.
