Hi,

I posted on here a while back about my career change. I undertook an illustration degree in higher education), and am now looking to move into Graphic Design.

My intention is to produce a folio in order to apply for an entry level position in the industry. However, at this stage i am faced with the dilemma, as to how i should go about constructing it. This is a somewhat awkward position to be in.

As I have little experience in adobe suite and little training in the field of graphic design, it might be more realistic to product self initiated 'studenty' projects.

On the other hand, i realise it would be more desirable for employers if i try to integrate commissions produced for local clients and small businesses, that would demonstrate a real world application of my abilities.

Any Advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Don't focus on your weaknesses, focus on your strengths in your portfolio. If you're good at Illustrations, put those in there. Not "studenty" pieces for the sake of having them in your portfolio.

When i used the term 'studenty' I had no intentions of using anything in my portfolio that looked unprofessional.

I was referring more to the notion of utilising 'Self created' briefs as opposed to real commisions produced for real clients.

"Self-created" projects are just as relevent as contracted work in a portfolio, if not more so. Using your strongest designs is always the way to go in a portfolio wether it was self designed or commisioned.
