Hi guys,
Iv just this minute signed up to your website and forums cos i am completly stuck on what to do for my 3rd year major project at uni. im studying gaphic design and i have to write a 6,000 word essay about something that interests me.... this is real hard as i cant think of n thin that does interest me apart from paintin, boozin and goin out and dont think that would make the best essay.
so i have decided to do somethin about what gives art its value, looking at the fat lady roman abramovich has just bought for 16million quid... but... my tutor (who i dont get on with) has said this is too wide and i need to think of a better question which isnt so wide and has something to do with Graphics as well. I would like it to be around the idea of value tho and am struggling to think of anything else other than...
Is fine art more valuable than graphic design and why?
i really need help and am open to any comments and opinions, i would really appriciate anythin anone can say.
cheers peeps

^that's pretty broad, why don't you just write about how you feel about the 2 disciplines or how they are/aren't connected in your opinion.
Of course, since this is supposed to about somehting that interests YOU, I don't think any of us could help you there.

The closest thing I can think of is the worth of really expensive graphic design. Like the design houses that charge hundreds of thousands of dollars for a brand identity, while smaller studios might charge a few thousand.

Unfortunately this topic is roughly 90% opinion. Its kinda like arguing whether the Beatles or the Rolling Stones were the greatest band of all time. If the essay can be based a lot on opinion then sure go for it. But it seems to me, something like "the origins of graphic design" would be an easier topic.
it doesnt really need to be what interests me.. that was just somethin the tutor said to 'get us started'
i appriciate the comment about its too much about your opinion so maybe the origins of design.
this made me think.... the essay should not be about your opinion of somethin, so if i was to ask a question i would use someone elses opinion of it any compare it to another.
lovin the responses, this is reallyhelping, cant thank you enough!
keep the ideas flowing..

What ideas do YOU have? Is is YOUR homework, isn't it?

"Is fine art more valuable than graphic design and why?" was the OP's idea, not mine Random, I basically agreed with you saying the topic was too broad. But BOZ, like Pan Toshi said, why don't you throw out some more of YOUR ideas and we could discuss.

Your attitude is amazing. You are a 3rd year student are asking a bunch of strangers to help you with your homework because you are lost because you have spent your time boozing instead? Grow up.

Indeed.
I actually take less offnese to the boozing than I do Boz's childish manner of writing.
Sorry to say, but if I didn't know better I would guess that the OP was a 13 year old text-messaging.
Not an adult, certainly not an adult in a University.
Leave the web speak to the kids. Use legitimate spelling (and case) when consulting a professional forum. Not too much to ask.
I'd love to help but I loathe to have to decipher a bunch of gobbldigook.

I agree with the web speak comment.
As far as the professional forum, I'm not sure if that's always apparent to a newcomer. However that being said, I think BOZ might further his educational career and responses to his inquiry if he had approached it in a more professionally written manner.
Seamas...I admire your demand for the professional status and the formality of the English language that is being lost in our younger generations.
I believe the Tower of Babel is being recreated. (oooh, there's an art work for me!)

I have seen examples from my college professors of students handing in 100%, some even hand written, web lingo essays and term papers. Which were, of course, flunked when the student failed to notice what was wrong after STRONG hints.
As for the OP. To what the teacher is asking for. 6000 words is roughly 6-8 pages. Depends on the other things they want. Like double spaceing etc. While some define this as "short". There are those that don't write for a living. Bsing a nice shiny paper only works on very small 1-3 page assignments. Anything over that and you're into "the professor will actually read this" territory. Any design professor that has design students writing 6000 words better not be "testing commitment" just so he can give busy work and not read it.
Basically you need to research the HELL out of a very focused topic in design. I don't know or care which one. Not my paper, thats YOUR problem. Then pick 1, 2, or 3 sources which give a lot of very reliable information backing up anything you put into the paper. DON'T COPY AND PASTE. Professors are smart. Thats why they are teachers. They have ways of telling if you did a cut and paste to finish a paper. Put your own spin on what you learn.
As for any offense. I have none. Yes, This is a professional forum. Sometimes less than professional things happen in other (off topic) areas of the forum. However this is still the internet, and this is the first forum on most searches for "graphic design forum". (except when I did it, but that's another story). I don't care if you drink, or type with internet lingo, or the fact you might have been partying instead of working. I'm giving basic advice for a common problem. How you use the advice, to solve the problem, that you have, is what YOU have to figure out. I can't pick your topic for you. You have to.

Well, my interest in perceived value would land somewhere concerning the different styles used in branding luxury vs economy products and services and the history and psycology surrounding that.
If you're hell bent on nothing but liquor then find a graphic related essay subject connected to that market, but whatever you do, come back here with your fleshed out ideas and prove to us that you're not a complete scavy tool.

Now that is a thought.
You could study the role of graphic design/advertising and vs underage drinking. Get some of your underaged friends boozed and then study the effects and what they think about local booze campaigns.
Just kidding...:o

There is design in alcohol branding.
There is design in alcohol branding.
Very true. I can think of several.
As an added note, whatever you do choose, if your passionate about the subject, then it will be much easier to write than the one your not passionate about. Maybe the alcohol branding is an area to look at and get your "burning question" from.

Ug, thank you! I was sitting here reading thinking...you should be more concerned with your English grade.
On a kinder note (it takes effort...I'm not feeling very amiable at the moment. I just wasted brain power deciphering the OP),
BOZ stop living in a drunken stupor and get serious about art. You said that you care about painting before you said "boozing". Why? Why do you care about painting? You need to evaluate YOUR feelings about art for this project, not ours. Keep your head out of the clouds long enough to reflect on why you enjoy painting to so much. If you truly care about art, then it's something that is inside of you that you can't contain. No, I'm not talking about that late-night puking session after a hard night of drinking.
I'm talking about art isn't a verb...it's not something that you do...it's something that you are. So, let's hear YOUR thoughts.
If you don't get serious, you're going to find yourself 10 times as confused as you are right now when/if you graduate. Best of luck...
