At work we switched from one PC based server, to another. No biggie, we were all excited about this. The only issue that the new server allows your file names be be ANYTHING you want, how ever long you want. Normally we wouldn't care about this, but a few of our printers have requested that no file (quark, font, and picture) names we send them be over 25 characters and not include any illegal characters (. , $ % # @ ! [spaces] * ), their RIPS can't handle the info and mess up. So they (or us) are forced to go in and manually edit each name that is not valid and then relink everything, this is annoying and time consuming!!! We have asked our design and production team to be cautious of this, but they don't listen and it's rather annoying.

Does anyone know of a patch or fix we can install on the server to limit the number and type of characters allowed? I don't need anything fancy, just it to bounce the name back when they disobey the rules of the server....

Thanks in advance. :o

other than an operating system choice, no, unless there's an option to flag file names with certain criteria, like too long, or special characters.

we have a similar problem moving our print files to the web. i'll just type my file name, not realizing that space need to be translated to underscores or something else, and not to use those special characters. i still forget to do it all the time, but i'm working on it. ;)

Any idea how to go about getting the server to flag characters like that? Or is it a mental/person only flag your referring too! :p

Our IT people are less then helpful with this situation... :(

yeah, i think ours is done on a "as we find them" basis. like you, we've got a bajillion files; it'd be years just converting all the names, and then relinking the files. *shudder* if there ever was a crap job for an intern at a crap studio, that would be it... ;)

wish i could offer more, but with the job i'm in now, i'm not allowed to monkey around with the servers...<br>
