The Mystery of the Bulge in the Jacket
By ELISABETH BUMILLER

WASHINGTON, Oct. 8 - What was that bulge in the back of President Bush's suit jacket at the presidential debate in Miami last week?
According to rumors racing across the Internet this week, the rectangular bulge visible between Mr. Bush's shoulder blades was a radio receiver, getting answers from an offstage counselor into a hidden presidential earpiece. The prime suspect was Karl Rove, Mr. Bush's powerful political adviser.
When the online magazine Salon published an article about the rumors on Friday, the speculation reached such a pitch that White House and campaign officials were inundated with calls.
First they said that pictures showing the bulge might have been doctored. But then, when the bulge turned out to be clearly visible in the television footage of the evening, they offered a different explanation.
'There was nothing under his suit jacket,' said Nicolle Devenish, a campaign spokeswoman.
'It was most likely a rumpling of that portion of his suit jacket, or a wrinkle in the fabric.'
Ms. Devenish could not say why the 'rumpling' was rectangular.
Nor was the bulge from a bulletproof vest, according to campaign and White House officials; they said Mr. Bush was not wearing one.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
end of article
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Btw, the bulge was spotted in all 3 presidential debates. If you search for Bush's Mystery Bulge, you'll find a ton of articles discussing the issue.

anyone ever see Puppet Masters? i think that's what it's called. anyway, these little alien creatures would attach themselves to that part of their host's back and stick this probe into their head and takeover the person's brain. maybe he's got one of those? they were pretty flat and you could only tell someone had one if they had tight or no shirt on. maybe we should all vote for kerry, just in case! no, just kidding about the kerry thing. i don't want to start another debate in here.
...and remember, tuesday is soylent green day

Whee! Conspiracy time. Just as crazy as the right-wing claim that Kerry smuggled in a 'cheat sheet.'
I doubt that it was anything. Contrary to some folk's opinions, Bush isn't a moron. He just isn't a great public speaker. He is quick witted and savvy, but the words sometimes come out wrong.
See 'Journeys with George' for a good look at Bush unscripted. He comes across as a smart, down-to-earth guy. (and the film was made by a Democrat!)

^ Although I agree with you on the fact that Bush is a bad speaker, the guy has some issues with learning too. The video with him talking about Soverign nations, and that those nations have soverigninity, thats not even a word...either is 'internets' the guy can't even speak english, and he has no clue what 'Soverign' means, I don't want a guy running the country if he can't even tell a peacefull nation because the word is to big for him. I also don't like debating, and I know Kerry is a much better speaker then Bush, but I still feel the guy is a moron....my opinion.

Doesn't Bush have a Bachelor's degree from Yale and a Master's from Harvard. Yeah, a real idiot! Neither of these guys are idiots, let's face it. Bush and Kerry both come from Blue Blood families, went to private schools and ivy league universities. They have been in politics for many years, and were able to memorize virtually everything there is to know about their opponent's life history before going head-to-head in these three debates. So Bush misspoke a time or two (or a hundred), so what? If somebody recorded audio or video of half of the things I say everyday, I'd hate to think how that'd make me look.
Bottom line, Bush and Kerry are sharp guys. You just have to vote for the guy who you believe will do the best for the country, and falls in line with your own ethical standards for society. For me, it's not even a contest!

Good point, Jason, except you're not running for President. This man runs our country.
Also, the Yale, thing...money talks. 'Nuff said.

Money can buy you admission, but not a MS degree. Also, I'd rather have a guy who makes his views and objectives clear and flubs a sentence or two than a guy who is a very eloquent, polished speaker, but doesn't have the vaguest clue how to turn things around.

Hell, nobody says Yogi Berra is a moron, yet he mangles just as many (or more) words as Bush does.

This is just an outside opinion from a non-biased non-american, but Bush doesn't strike me as an overly intelligent person.
That may be a good thing, he seems to be blunt and forthcoming about his intentions.
Then what do I know.

Daddy in high places counts for a lot in my opinion.
Scary to see such a powerful man come across so dim. I heard that soverign speach...... my word, what a joke! Sure everyone makes mistakes from time to time but to me, Bush comes across as a dumbass, a damn scary one.

Didn't Bush graduate with a C average? That'll still get you a Masters or Doctorate.
What were those degrees in anyway?
What was it you called a doctor who graduates with a C average?
Doctor.
Wouldn't want him working on me though.
