Welcome! I can't speak Mandarin but I can speak Cantonese. I can't read or write Chinese though.
We went to Beijing in 2006 for 1 week around this time of the year. It was so very hot!
It must be very exciting over there leading up to the Olympics. Is there a lot of graphic design to be done?

Welcome phoenix3d! I do have a bit of a silly question. A common thing with children here is to tease about digging a hole in the ground all the way to China. I've always wondered if Chinese children tease about digging a hole all the way to the U.S.? :)

lol, oh my!!!! I don't think it is silly at all... it is a so naive question and of coz i were one of silly kids when a child, haha... yes, there are many kids having this question in China too.
even now, after i watched the hollywood movie: doomsday, cyclone... i always thought about: if i dig a hole from now and ready for everything waiting the doomsday, maybe i can alive one day, just like Noah's Ark...
this seems so silly too right? but it is better than digging a hole to the US haha

I had the most amazing meal in Beijing at a Chinese restaurant. I wish I knew the name of the restaurant. We had our own private dining room with our own bathroom and waiters. Our host said that President Nixon ate in the same private dining room we ate in. We had drunken shrimp and lots of other delicacies.
We also went to a fantastic Japanese restaurant in Beijing too. You walked in and the entire restaurant floor space was filled with water (and fish) and there were wooden bridges and paths built so you could get to the tables. Fish swimming under you while you ate more fish! Stunning.
Oh and of course we had Peking Duck the first night we got there!
You might have noticed I like to eat :D

No, my fiance is a baby when it comes to spicy food so we didn't go to any sichuan restaurants (we heard they are spicy).
We went to 1 noodle house and it was a lot of fun ordering when we couldn't speak the language but the people were very friendly and helped us.
My parents will be in Beijing later this year. Any recommendations?

oh i see! But wehn your parents will be in beijing this year?
I suggest that they avoid the period of Olympic... or maybe they are here just for watching the Olympic? There will be so much strict terms so keep it safe during that time and it would be not so convenient.

One night me and my friends went to an all you can eat (which means all you can and will eat lol) and ordered a big meal for the 3 of us and we couldnt finish it... We tried to pay like 3 times but they wouldn't let us until we had the whole thing down. In the end we went back to the house and I died. lol
I do not remember evrything we ate down there but we had a lot of spicy and really good food. Drunk lots of beer and some kind of whiskey lol and had fun at a Karaoke. We stayed with a family that didn't speak English for a couple of days and took us to a karaoke bar. We had our own private room with a big screen TV and more wine and beer... I do think it was her Family's Karaoke bar. I realized with all the bus rides and everything Karaoke is very popular down there.

My parent's dates haven't been finalised yet for Beijing. They were supposed to go in November but the airline called and told them that flight wasn't going to be going anymore so they can change their dates to suit them for free. I've told them to avoid the Olympics and to go afterwards but let's see if they will listen to me!
Chou Doufu! I've never had it before, but my pet rabbit is calld Tofu (Doufu) and I call him Chou Doufu all the time. BTW for those that don't know, Chou Doufu translates directly as "Stinky Tofu". :D
tuliptree
07-03-2008, 12:51 AM
LOL, that's actually a really cute nickname for a rabbit. So, do they do something special to the tofu to make it stinky for this dish?
budafist
07-03-2008, 01:06 AM
They sure do!
Stinky tofu is a form of fermented tofu, which, as the name suggests, has a strong odor. It is a popular snack in East and Southeast Asia, particularly Taiwan, Indonesia, and China, where it is usually found at night markets or roadside stands, or as a side dish in lunch bars.
It is perhaps interesting to note that the Mandarin term chou doufu is a direct translation of the words "stinky tofu". However, the Mandarin word chou does not have the same negative connotation as the English word "stinky". Chou therefore serves mainly as a factual descriptor and not a judgment on the virtues of the odor. Occasionally chou is translated as "fragrant", but this too imposes a "pleasant" or "flowery" judgment on the term, which does not accurately represent the food either.

lol:D :D o, my god! Do you know i was a bit down mood before arriving at the office, BUT WHEN i am here and reading your dicussions... lol, haha
o,my!!! I could not help laughing out loudly... It is out of my expection that Chinese food is a so hot topic here. And Choudoufu is so hot here? haha
you guys are not afraid that choudoufu make all of your away? lol
well, i did love eating choudoufu so much when i was a kid, but i don't eat it now... the smell... i can not bear up it... it is so stinky... ewwwwwwww, but it do has very good taste... you have to brush your teeth after eatting it... or nobody dare to talk to you...
One of my uncles made the choudoufu. First, cut the doufu into small pieces.
Second, when you cook the rice porridge, take out the stiff water and keep them to be cool down. ( the porriage without rice, just stiff water)
Third, find a Jar, the best is chinaware jar, please note it must be airproof.
put one layer of doufu, salt and watered them with the stiff water;
then the second doufu, salt and watered them with the stiff water;
then please airproof the jar and dig a hole in the ground and put the jar into the hole... waiting for 15-20days... yeah!!! you got choudoufu
haha
well, choudoufu was invented by a poor people in old china, there is the legend passed down from generation to another generation... but my english is not so good enough to tell it here...
