I was wondering why Armageddon and Deep Impact were on TV last night.

The Tunguska Event is put in an interesting, postmodern fantasy context in Thomas Pynchon's most recent novel Against the Day. Highly recommended!

Tunguska was an asteroid/comet thingy that hit the earth and cause horrible damage when it struck. It is only just now starting to return normal...
Those movies were both asteroid about to destroy movies.

So, if you consider something that leveled hundreds of square miles of trees, blew out windows and knocked people over hundreds of miles away to be a "near miss..."
I'm scared to know what you would consider a "direct hit." :eek:
Maybe Meteor Crater (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteor_Crater)?
Or maybe Chicxulub (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicxulub_Crater)?

Scientists calculated if it was to hit only four minutes earlier
it would have leveled St. Petersburg / Leningrad.
The destruction to the surrounding areas of Northern Europe
would surely have altered the course of history.
Ignorance is bliss? Roll of the dice? Chance or destiny?
