Workers want better-looking colleagues, more natural light
11:18AM Thursday June 26, 2008
NEW YORK - A quarter of US workers complain of working in gloomy environments that they say could be improved with windows that open or better-looking colleagues, according to a survey released yesterday.
The workplaces considered depressing were cramped, noisy or smelly, had no natural light or poor ventilation or offered no privacy, according to a study conducted by Echo Research for Ambius, an interior landscaping and workplace design company.
According to the survey, 25 per cent of respondents complained of working in such unpleasant offices.
Looking at ways to improve their surroundings, 37 per cent of those surveyed chose windows that can be opened, 16 per cent chose brightly colored walls, 11 per cent said more attractive colleagues and 7 per cent opted for a more pleasant odour, the survey said.
Three-quarters said the environment has a substantial impact on employee happiness and motivation and, on average, a third said they would be more productive in a more attractive environment.
Three-quarters of workers also said office surroundings are important when considering potential employers.
The telephone survey was conducted for Ambius among a random sample of 426 US adults employed full-time between April 11 and April 14.
It had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.75 percentage points.
Ambius' North American offices are based in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, and it is a division of Rentokil Initial.

11 per cent said more attractive colleagues
So of course the headline is about the unattractive colleagues. BAD editor!

I don't have windows that can be opened.

Nah, I read it because you posted it! You always find interesting things. :D
I have a window that opens, but I wouldn't want to 10 months out of the year. And if I forget and leave it open (it's wired) at 6 p.m. the burglar alarm would go off and I'd be in BIG trouble.

we have no windows in our office, but we do have plenty of beer....so i guess it evens out in the long run
What they didn't tell you was that all 11% worked at the same place. ;)

As long as I could reserve the right to squish your dog under my foot when it started yapping uncontrollably when somebody walked in the door.
Rabbit poo is a no no as well.

lol. I didn't know that about dogs and bunny poop. Bunnies eat bunny poop but it's very good for them.

One of my old bosses had an old english sheep dog that used to ravenously eat horse crap. The dog had to be shaved to have short hair because it was always getting covered in poop (lived on a farm) and it would come bounding up to you, plant both front paws (that were usually covered in horse crap) on your chest and breath horse butt breath in your face. Other than that he was a sweet dog.

I liked that story. :)
I try to avoid kisses from Tofu after he's been eating poop.

I've just been told that there is a free morning tea shout this morning. For those that don't know, that is a small meal around 10am when you get a 15 minute break to have a munch. A free morning tea shout means that someone else is paying and provided the nourishment.

Where I work they tried to have a doggie day for different people. It worked really well, right up until one person (the person whose idea it was, ironically) brought in her mastiff/great dane mix. Sweet dog, but really young and not really well trained. Got the kibosh put on the whole deal after the dog bit someone (still a puppy, but a very, very BIG puppy). :(
Otherwise, it was fun having other people's dogs in the office.

I'd rather have ugly co-workers. You wouldn't be tempted to have affairs so you'd stay out of trouble, you'd look that much better elbow to elbow with some quasi-modos, and your co-workers would be more apt to keeping you around because your better looking - job security!

I'd love to bring my cat to work, except she has this thing about people using the computer: she gets jealous of someone manhandling something when those hands could be petting her instead. Same thing with eating. Any time me or my fiancé start to do something involving our hands, out she comes, meowing for attention. Bless her sweet but selfish little heart.

the owner brings in his little terrier every so often...he's so well mannered and expectant. Hell sit and stare at you until you move to pat him, then he'll position himself closer or hop on your lap.
