yo!

I've been a member of this site for years, but haven't really introduced myself. I'm a graduated in May from Texas State University's design program, and I now live in Barcelona, Spain with my boyfriend. We moved to Barcelona so he could take a Master's program and I could absorb the artistic culture. The only problem is, I'm stuck! I don't have any connections to artists, designers, etc. and the language barrier isn't helping when I DO meet someone (I'm working on that!!).

So my questions are... does anyone have any Barcelona design resources? Know of a website or forum like this one for Barcelona? Tips? jobs? Euros? :)

Gracias!!

When you get settled please read through the threads located here (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=42). They will give you all the info you need on how the forum runs, the rules and regs, and give you some background info on our long running, inside jokes ;)

Welcome Yelli.

I can't help you with the Barcelona networking, but if you're feeling like you need a network of like minded people, there are plenty on here.

So you're from Texas and now in Spain?

Well here's some Texas and Spanish food to get you feeling more at home here.

Well thank you! Now I'm hungry. There's plenty of Paella here, but...I miss Tex Mex!!

At least the colours are similar. Aren't the ingredients also similar? Could you put together a Tex Mex meal with ingredients that you find in a Barcelona market?

They're similar as far as most cultures have similar food: rice, meat, seafood, bready-something-or-other. I think yellow Mexican rice is that way probably because the traditional Spanish rice is seasoned with local saffron (plus Saffron is an adaptation of the Arabic word Za'faran meaning "yellow".) :)
You won't find many fajitas, tacos, refried beans, enchiladas, etc. here. But they do serve a lot of nachos and will call blue jeans "Texans" or "Vaqueros." Makes me feel weird when I go shopping for jeans..

We don't have many Mexican food places in NZ and the places we do have would make Americans gasp at the price. Still, I had a burrito last night at restaurant with rice and beans and it was delicious. It was $21 (about $18+ in US). So yeah, not a cheap meal. Better to buy rice and beans and DYI at home.

*gasps*

buda, you need to open a Tex/Mex restaurant! With more reasonable prices, you'd make a mint!! Just ask the Googe for some recipes. :D

yelli, welcome to GDF. You'll find that most threads eventually turn to food here.

After I eat some real Tex/Mex on location, I might be swayed to open few stores.

How much do you pay for a burrito, rice and beans?

à la carte about $12 US, for a regular restaurant (http://www.pueblosolisstl.com/). Not including tax and tip. So it's closer than I thought. (Haven't eaten there in a year or so...)

Taco Bell (http://www.tacobell.com/bigbox/) fast food "big box" meal, $4.99 plus tax.

Pueblo Solis, however everything's made from scratch, including the tortillas. As we say around GDF, you get what you pay for. =]

It is closer then. I guess there's only about 5 Mexican people in New Zealand so that's the biggest difference! If there were more of them, then more eateries and more competitive pricing.

Holy moly that's ridiculous! Mexican food can be some of the cheapest cuisine to make! I hope you had sirloin steak strips and some kind of organic super-bean and rice with gold flakes for that price. Or else a top-shelf margarita included...

Where I used to work, in East Austin, a burrito meal with rice and beans could easily be found for $5.50. Cheap!!
And, a Tex-Mex chain is a fine idea. We're throwing around the idea of drawing up a concept for one here in Barcelona. It's got cheap ingredients and they love their meats!

Mmmmm....meat...

I've actually never made a mexican meal at home. Although I do have rice and beans and meat on occasion. I love rice....and beans...and meat. Speaking of rice, I was looking at my big sack of rice this morning and I notieced there was rice on the floor around the sack of rice. On closer inspection I realised there was a little nibble taken out of the sack. My naughty pet bunny has been in the kitchen again!

Welcome aboard, yelli!!

Though not a connoisseur of Tex-Mex per se, I am Puerto Rican and make a damn good rice and beans. And yes, very cheap to make. Maybe a $1's worth of rice, a 75¢ can of pink or kidney beans, and maybe a $1's worth of tomato paste, sofrito, garlic, seasoning and chopped ham and you have a meal that will feed 3-4.

We went shopping today and found a rad 'international" aisle in the supermarket... half "Mexican" and half "everything that goes on in Asia."

Here you can see the out-of-focus bringers of sadness that Spain has to offer.

The salsa is made in the Netherlands...

do you love the logo on the chips? (http://www.mexifoods.com/ing/lafirma.htm)

I always find the international aisle in the supermarket confusing. I mean, if I want to find a certain brand of noodles, they might be in the noodle section or the might be in the international section. There isn't really any rhyme or reason. Its not even about where that particular pack was made.

True... but noodles are nothin' compared to a good Margarita or Mexican Martini that I am truly missing here. Sad day! I like this forum as much as I like food :) thanks for the welcome
